Recommended plugs with MSD 6
« on: December 02, 2008 - 10:40:51 AM »
Hi all
I recently upgraded my 71 Chally's 400 engine ignition from the standard to an MSD 6 with the flame thrower coil. Someone suggested I should now widen the gap of the normal spark plugs to 100, or better still use different plugs all together.
Any advice on this?

Cheers

I  would not increase the gap to that size. If you look in the MSD manual it will give you a recommended gap spec, dependant on compression ratio. I run .045" with my little engine and MSD. .100 is way too wide, will probably kill your coil pretty fast as well. In my opinion..

I would use the same Champ RJ12YC plugs gapped at .045 instead of .035, more then .045 is hard on the coil & wires

I run the stock Champion N9YC's in the beast (Hemi).  I split the difference and run the gap @ .45.  Never had a problem....

Thank you all for the replies. Just to confirm, I believe you are saying .045 inches right?
When I said 100 I meant in cm i.e. 0.100cm as normally they come gapped at 0.070cm.
Anyway, not quite sure of the equivalent of one to the other but 45 thou (inches) is what I will do.
Thanks
