Exterior door handle restore
« on: December 03, 2008 - 12:33:31 AM »
My door handles are in good condition except for the indent where your fingers go to grab the handle.  It looks like some kind of silver or gray color in there.  Also looks like the driver handle may have been replaced somewhere along the line.  In any case, both sides are slightly different colors.  What is the right color and how would you recommend painting them?

Thanks

I put repops on my Challenger which I'm real happy with but on our AMX's we had this same issue.  what I did is take the handle apart and mask off the chrome first, then sand the paint down enough to remove all scratches with 600 grit. then just find the correct shade of argent or any flat silver paint you like and spray it lightly don't gob it on,  and if you don't use flat paint they'll look funny. they will get scratched up again that's just the way it goes, I just try to be careful and tell my wife to watch the fingernails everytime she touches the door handle.

I took the easy way out and bought re-pops.

Good luck with restoring the originals.

Honestly, I'm more worried about "installing" my re-pops. That's quite a bit of work. :clueless:

It's not too bad. The handle is held on by one nut that you can get at thru a hole cut out behind your door panel. The not so fun part is disconnecting the linkage for the door lock, and door latch, and reconnecting them again. It helps to be blessed with long skinny fingers.

Does someone make repop handles for the Challenger that fit correctly now? I had always heard that they didn't match the curve of the door? :clueless:

Bought mine from MP. Now wondering about the fit. Can't send them back so guess it's pointless to worry. :walkaway:

A couple years ago they started repoping the Challenger ones, they fit very nice and look great. before that I tried a set of NOS later production ones and a set of standard repops and they fit crumby, make sure you get the Challenger only ones and you'll be happy.

My repops are from back in 2001. They only made Cuda handles back then.   :bricks1:

Honestly, they fit, and you don't know they aren't Challenger handles unless you are looking at a Challenger that does have the correct handles next to it.

Good info to have. I'm only going for a driver, so the repops should be great.

Thanks, Mike
