small block transmission help
« on: December 04, 2008 - 11:52:48 PM »
Ok tonight 2nd and 3rd went out in my 904 and the fluid smells burnt (smells real burnt). So I called some of my contacts here in the Bay and I have a line on a good running 727 that is in a 78 cordoba with a 360 for about $100. So my question is what do I need to be aware of for the switch to the 727. Of course the driveline is different length and the slip yoke is different. I have a driveline out of a 340 4 speed 1970 challenge; is it the same as the 727 driveline? Will the 78 727 have the mounting location on the bottom of the tailshaft for the shifter bracket? Will my transmission cooler lines bolt right up or will they need modification? Is there anything else  I should be concerned with or am I missing anything?

Yes, the driveline out of the '70 4 speed should be the same length as the one for the 727. You may also have to check to make sure the u-joints are the same at the other end of the driveshaft too, since the 8 3/4's came with two sizes. Not sure about the mounting location since its not coming out of an e-body, same for the cooler lines.

The driveshaft has the larger rear u joint because it came out of a 4 speed car, and my car has the small pinion, so I will need to get a special u joint. I would normally rebuild the transmission myself, but with my current situation I live 250 miles from my parents shop and I live in an apartment complex. So I have to trailer the car to their place when i go up for new years and the easiest thing to do is just swap it out. In the mean time I will ride a bike to work as I live 3 miles from work.

Yes,the mount and cooler lines are in the same location. You will need the filler tube and dust cover from the 727,swap your shifting/kick down levers to the 727 from the 904.

I never do anything to violate rule #1 with my musclecars. That's anything that would make them either slower or heavier.  :grinno:

Would be cool to swap out to a 727. Was also thinking if you have a buddy with a garage near you maybe you could talk him into letting you drop the pan at their place and see if the front servo/band anchor failed or something so you could drive it home rather than trailering it.

Of course if you have your own trailer then it is a moot point.

Pretty weird you would lose 2nd and 3rd. Only stuff (I think) on the same circuit is the front/kickdown servo and accumulator. If you still have reverse the front clutch is good. And you still have 1st so the rear clutch is good. Terry-what do you think?

Is there a good reference, i.e. a book or manual, for rebuilding and upgrading Torqueflite's?  I know there are a few for GM and FoMoCo, but I've not seen anything for Mopar.

We need to know what he means by "second and third is out" does it rev up like neutral or does it just not upshift out of low?

"the fluid smells burnt (smells real burnt)" this is never a good sign!  :grinno:

There really isn't much to them. 2-3 hour job on the bench. The hardest part is cleaning the case.

It won't shift out of 1st. When it gets to it's shift point it just slips like no ones business starts reving up and makes bad noises. My original description may not have been the most accurate but the end result is the same nothing past 1st gear. I have a friend who will loan me his trailer, so it's not a big deal, plus I like working on my cars with my Dad and some of the parts and tools I need are at my parents place.

I think I may have to order one of those. Are there any special tools required to rebuild them?

It sounds like it is shot, the stinking fluid is a sign of heat inside.
No tools that you can not get around. I will help you on here, if you need help, just post a thread and ask!

Thanks. About how long does it normally take to rebuild a torqueflite? My Dad and I have experience with turbo 350's (he's a Chevy guy) but haven't had a torqueflite apart yet.
