8 3/4 outer axle seal replacement
« on: December 05, 2008 - 06:37:34 PM »
I need to replace the outer axle seals on my 8 3/4 on my 68 Charger. Yeah, I know its not an e body but I assume its nearly the same axle set up as my Cudas 8 3/4. I haven't really messed with rear ends much (on a car anyway  :naughty:). Does anyone know of a good source to show me the correct way to do this or can one of you guide me through it please. I have the outer seals purchased. Will I need any other seals or parts to do the job? I am also installing larger torsion bars up front. I have seen a special tool for this online. Do I actually need a special tool? Should I replace other related parts like the boots too? Thanks for any and all help.

Why are you cahnging the outer axle seal ? , the outer seal is just a grease seal , the retainer ring needs to be cut & the brg pressed off & pressed back on with a new retainer ring to get at it , if the diff is leaking oil it is generally a damaged inner seal that is the problem, these are easy to change
the T bars can be removed by undoing the 15/16 nut  on the lower control arm pivot shaft & prying the LCA & T bar back enough to release the T bar , no special tool needed

That is more revealing. I was replacing it because it is leaking fluid all over the back of my left rear brake housing. I guess I need inner seals according to what you're saying. How do I go about doing that?

remove the axle , inside the axle tube you will see a seal , pry it out & drive in a new seal using a socket or proper seal driver
Make sure you repack the brgs with wheel brg grease as they have no other source of lube

Also make sure the vent for the housing is not stopped up. That could also cause the seal to leak.

Ok, lets back up and get just a little more elementary. Do the axles just pull out? Aren't they held in by something? Otherwise your wheels would fly off. Do you have to take apart the  housing to get to C clips of some sort? I've never had a rear end apart. The closest I have come is replacing axle bearings on my Jeep CJ. Those were held in by a flange connected between the outer bearing and the end of the axle tube. Is this how they are retained on a mopar?

Assuming it is 8 3/4 diff there are 5 bolts inside the brake drum , undo the 5 bolts & pull the axle out

I did mine for the first time about two years ago and did not have any problem with changing them.  You should not have any problems, just don't rush anything.

When I rebuilt the 8-3/4 in my 68 Cuda I drove the inner seals in until they bottomed out against the ridge and it worked fine. No leaks at all. I did measure first to make sure when they were in that far they'd be located properly on the axle and they were. Since they're not easy to tell if their straight once installed I figure the ridge would make sure they were straight.
