1970...Steering box....Metric bolts?????
« on: December 06, 2008 - 02:15:12 PM »
I was going to tighten up my steering nut today because it felt like too much play.  I had the wife to rotate the steering wheel back and forth while I adjusted the screw.  I found that the entire box was loose.   The only socket that fit was a 13mm...........Back then I didn'[t think there were metric bolts used............. :feedback:

The originals have a 12 point head, so they take a 1/2" 12 point socket to tighen them.

I would guess that the 1/2 socket you tried is a 6 point, so it would not fit. A 13mm 12 point socket will fit them, but loosely.

Hey Wade............I actually have a set  like that.........  :roflsmiley:....

And Barry..........I looked at my sockets.......Yes I tried the reg  (which was a 6 point) and the metric..........is a 12 point.........

So folks , it  just goes to show there is still information on this site that some of us folks don't know...........Or think about...............

Next time I try out a socket and it won't fit that will remind  me to see if it is a 12 point bolt. :cooldancing: :cooldancing:

You have already found the only three 12 point bolts on the whole car.

Yes, and when you go to tighten them you realize that a 3/8" 12 point isn't in your set.LOL

Nope. 1/2" = 12.7mm.

Close but not close enough if you need to put some weight on it like you do with those steering box bolts. I think they torque to 85lbs or something?
