What is a Trans Brake?
« on: December 08, 2008 - 04:39:27 PM »
I've heard about it talked on Pinks many, many times, but don't know what it is....what is a Trans-Brake and what is it used for?  Is it good/bad to have?  Y?

Also, what is a 10-50 setup?   :dunno:

Trans brake is a device that locks the tranny in 1st gear & reverse at the same time so the car will not move & releases the reverse to launch the car
10.5 set up is a tune up tune dial the car in 0on a 10.5 second index

That's interesting, I always assumed it was some kind of line lock for the tranny.  How the heck do you put it into 1st and reverse at the same time?

A trans-brake allows a automatic to do the banzi launch enjoyed by the stick-shift cars.  When you do this, if your rear supension is working correctly, it will drive the tires into the track.  You can't do this holding your foot on the gas and brake at the same time, then releasing the brake, because you have already loaded the rear suspension.

The goal never changes - Stop the 60' timer with your back tires

:grinyes:  just figuring how not to tear stuff up on power shifts is the key.

In drag racing, a transbrake is a setup installed in automatic transmissions which selectively places the transmission in first and reverse gears simultaneously, effectively holding the race car stationary as if the foot brake was applied. The transbrake is activated by the driver by applying electrical current to a solenoid at the transmission. With the transbrake engaged (transmission locked), the engine throttle can be increased to any position (opening) in preparation for launch without the race driver worrying about the car creeping forward. Milliseconds before the green light illuminates on the Tree the transbrake is released (by the driver releasing an electrical switch or by a delay box "timing out" originally triggered by the driver releasing an electrical switch) and the car launches forward, it's engine already in the higher power band and the transmission already in low gear.

I didn't think I did, I just heard those 2 sayings thrown around alot on Pinks and I never knew what they meant.  I kinda had an idea about the TransBrake, but I had no clue what the heck a 10-50 setup was.   :2thumbs:
