    Arresting cable recovery. Recovery meaning landing. Sorry, Navy jargon dies hard.

    The F-18 has hands off recovery capabilities. The pilot can be badly injured and the system can bring the aircraft in for recovery once on final and locked. Like I said, there were some bad decisions made. It is unfortunate, but it does happen.

    All carrier landings are traps, except for helicopters and Harriers.  Here's a video of several traps - the landing at about the 50 second point shows the cable clearly.



    There are four cables strung across the deck, but sometimes they miss - known as a "bolter" in Navy jargon. You'll notice that when there's a bolter, they take off again; this is because they go to full throttle when they hit the deck.  Why?  So this doesn't happen  :scared: :walkaway::

    Or do you mean auto-recover an aircraft?  I don't know for sure, but it seems to me that it wouldn't make sense to have a carrier aircraft with that capability and not be able to do it on a carrier.

    I think its amazing they can take off and land on a carrier at all  :eek7:

    kinda cool in a none combat sort of way.  :rofl:

    Yes they do that on carriers. It is typically not used other than on carriers.
