Is there a way to......
« on: December 12, 2008 - 10:12:42 PM »
Is there a way to set a member to "ignore"?

I know other forums have it. I find it quite usefull at times.

Thanks,
Barry

Barry, just let me know, and I'll try to avoid posting as often.   :sadwavey:

Seriously, I dont think there is that option on this forum.  I know most do.   :dunno:

I use it mostly for folks that offer suggestions to others about how to break the laws, black market sources for counterfit VIN tags, people selling losse VINs tags & titles & the like.

It makes it easier to know who NOT to ever help.

Hi Barry, Unfortunately it can't be done on this forum software, sorry to say. Simple Machines "may" add it in as an option in the future but for now there is currently nothing in Admin that allows users to ignore other members.

I'm assuming this stems from the other thread, I must have missed something.  Not sure how to ignore, or even how it works.

Thanks Carl, good to know.

Pink,
the way it works on other forums;

1. Click on user name & a menu comes up.

2. Once there, click on "Ignore this user".

From then on you will not see anything they post.

One problem with ignoring these types is that you will not know what they are up to. Do we have a rule against these types of activities that would allow the thread or post to be removed?

Not 100% sure I follow? If they are doing something bad, someone will see them unless 100% of the active members have that user on their ignore list LMAO. Even Gordon from Junk Brothers would have at least 1 or 2 people as "friends", well......maybe not. So if "Bob" has "Chris" on his ignore list and Chris does something bad or acts up and runs his mouth about "Bob", others (you'd hope) would report it.

If you are reading a thread and someone you have on your ignore list posts you simply don't see it. Eg: like between your post an Barry's could be a post by "OJ Simpson" if you ignored him. Some forums have it set so the post doesn't appear at all, while others (the majority) have it so all you see is a single line, like the deep blue line above our posts "Posted by: Carlwalski" that is all you see and some have "user is on your ignore list" etc.

Thanks Carl,
I'll try to be more clear. I respect Barry's knowledge and worry that things WILL get by if he does not see them. He has done a great job at educating people so maybe that would not happen anymore. I was wondering if someone posted something that was an illegal activity, do we have it in the rules here where the post or thread can be removed? This way no one sees it. I understand Barry's point also. If a question is asked he does not want to answer someone who is up to no good now, or in the past. It looks like for now he will have to build a black book.

If there was something illegal going on of course we can remove the post or thread.   :grinyes:

I see what you mean now Tod. ;) If Barry does block/ignore "spam tag users" then you'd bet that most of us here would report the activities of said person to the appropriate people if Barry can not see said posts. I'm sure Barry will agree in saying that he's not the only one at CCC who can spot someone up to no good lol. No "rules" here from what I have seen but Admin and the mods (if Admin has allowed them in their settings) can remove posts AND delete entire threads by a few simple clicks of their mouse. But to delete an entire thread is pretty harsh, so it would have to be something very bad IMO (ie Viagra or sex video spam posts).

I generally use it AFTER someone has stepped over the legal line. Some of these guys still post asking for help on things after such posts.

I would rather not help those kind of people with anything except going to jail.  ;)

Hopefully that helps clear that up?
