I had 3 different guys and the blasting place I used recommend the same thing - scuff and seal with POR 15 or some other product. My roof is pretty solid, just looks ugly underneath. Of course there is no way to decide completely without seeing the car. I'm going to scuff and seal mine.

I tried wire brushing it but it didn't seem to get the rusty color gone. That Gran coupe headliner glue was fossilized and it seemed to make it harder for the rust look to dissapear. No pitting TG.

I still have some Rust Bullet so probably go use it up.

Mine had all that 'scaly' rust, caused by moisture trapped between the headliner and roof.

It's good that you were afraid to blast there.  My media blasting shop refused to blast it, and my body/paint guy agreed with the decision.  Apparently, those roof panels are susceptible to stretching slightly, which can cause your paint to look wavy later.  I went with their recommendation to lightly wire brush it, and seal with POR.

I used a sandingdisc on the grinder and sealed with por.  one problem occured; when the por had dryed I could see the bar in the middle of the roof on the outside....  :pullinghair:  I guess the por shrinks a little when dry. I still have to cut it loose and see if it takes back the original shape...

This time I am going to put a new top on my car.  Just did not want to try to finish the under side.   Plus there are some dents in it that would be hard to repair.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

If you have dents, it's best to fix them before you put on a vinyl top. A rug will not hide a dent

Take a little muriatic acid on a rag and rub. most of the rust color will come off and you can finish with a good wet sanding.
Paint the same day or even the same hour if possible

I used some rustoleum on a car for the under roof and floors.  Came out great

Great idea. I just got back from sanding it. I'll get some and try that also.

hmm, umm, oops.sounds like you may have stretched the roof skin with the sanding disc if you got it too hot.if so you may have to remove the bar and sand that section the same way to stretch it flat again
