PLow quit working.
« on: December 21, 2008 - 07:39:22 AM »
:pullinghair: Bad day yesterday, snow storm dumping 12' of the white crap,my antilock brakes on the truck are making a wierd niose and not working and my plow quit working!Luckily I was almost done doing the driveway when the blade started moving slow so I stopped and checked the fluid. It was low so I added some and now it barley moves an inch. What could be wrong?I can hear the pump motor in all directions but doesn`t seem to be pushing fluid, could there be a valve stuck or air in the lines or is the pump junk? And my wife wonders why I`m grumpy when the white stuff hits!  :pullinghair:

I helped a buddy fix his plow on Friday, we changed the motor on his fisher it cost him a little over 200 beans.  He had to replace the blade on his as well, all told cost him 1200..  He has one of those Homesteader plastic jobs, at least it was light.  It was a pita.
Could be air, but where did did all the fluid go the first time?  Was the vent wet all around it?

What kind of plow?  Could the brake noise just be the sound of the anti-locks working?

Yes Anti lock brakes feel and sound freaky kind of like a set of Beads across wood.

A slow moving plow usally is frozen water in the pump, best way to handle that in a pinch is to get a drop light and a blanket put the light aginst the pump cover with blanket and let it warm up, after some time give it a try and if all works  as should just go do your plowing just keep the blade moving left to right while up that should keep the water from refreezing,,,,,,,,,,, afetr the storm change fluid adding an ounce of dry gas if its a Meyer, if a fisher just take the motor off and wipe out any water.....

Right, frozen water in the system.  Our forklift does the same thing when it gets very cold.

Yup,pulled the pump off and it was frozen around the filter plugging it completely.Thawed it out and cleaned it off and added fresh fluid and got it working up and down but won`t go left or right,I`m thinking it must also be frozen in the valve area? And  oh yeah, another 8-14 today on top of the foot we got Friday! At least I can get by with up and down working till I pull it off and thaw it out again.
