Newbie from LA
« on: December 23, 2008 - 06:00:10 AM »
Sup guys, Ive been going to this site for a while but havent done any posting.  Heres my car in before and after pics.  The '71 in the first pic is my uncles challenger.  Mines a '72 w/ 318, 4 speed.  I got it a few months ago from my uncle.  He also told me about this site.  His name is Changin Gears.  Anyway, he lives in Alabama and I live near LA, so I flew out to his place after the car came back from the body shop.  We managed to put the car together in about a month.  This was the first car I had done any serious work on so I was a complete novice.  Fortunately for me, Uncle Changin Gears knows a thing or two about mopars, so he showed me the ropes.  The car went together almost flawlessly.  Once, we were done, my dad (who also was in town at the time) and I made the epic journey back across the country.

That's so much fun!  I made a cross-country trip in the back of a 1972 'Cuda from San Diego, CA to Annapolis, MD.

I don't really remember much of it - I was 11 months old!!  Dad was pluckin' French Fries out of that car for YEARS after that trip!  :)

Congrats on the Chally!!  Ain't gonna miss that car from a mile away!

Welcome to the site and sounds like you have a great uncle teaching all about building these cars. Post some more pictures and give us some more details about your Challenger.

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody.

So tell us a little about the 72 any more plans or mods?

Its got a holley 650cfm carb.  Dougs headers, 2.5" dual exhaust made at a local shop, dynomax mufflers.  Rear axle is 8-3/4 suregrip with 3.23 gears.
Its got drum brakes in the back and shiny new discs up front.

Im gonna put 71 side stripes and the 71 hood blackout on it in a few days.  I got the stripes from ChallengerGary.  They look great.  I'll post more pics once i get the stripes on.  I hope to finish the interior over the next year.  It needs some love - the plastic panels are disintigrating, theres no headliner, and the dash has a big crack in it.

Eventually I want to put some more power under the hood.  Prolly a 408 stroker and hot rod gears.  Thats a few years down the road though.  Upgrades are few and far between when flipping burgers at the local grill is your source of income.

Welcome. I see you both are useing 4 speeds :2thumbs:  Did Changin Gears take his car out to the track for you?   He keeps his tuned. :burnout:

We never got around to going to the track.  We had to finish the car and drive it back before my classes started.  I got to ride in the hemi and the 440-6 polara though.  Those cars had way more power then anything I had been in before.  I can only imagine how cool the race car must be.

Very nice ride, I am glad to see another young gun getting the Mopar itch. That is always the time when I am most nervous, when the engine/tranny are in the air over the radiator support lol. Enjoy that car and I am glad you are driving the crap out of it, thats what they were made for.

P.S. I also love old unks Sassy Grass vert too  :cooldancing:
