Federal employees are prohibited from striking because of a no-strike clause in the employment contracts.  In 1981 they did anyway and Reagan told them to return to work within 48 hours or face termination.

Mike
I believe they tried to call his bluff, and most of them did get fired.  Air Traffic was a bit shaky for a while because of all the new controllers.

Another factor in UAW pay is "overtime" that they put in. At GM's Detroit-Hamtramck plant, for instance, there's a maze in one part of the plant made out of very tall filing cabinets. Inside the maze are a bunch of cots made from welded-together office chairs. Several dozen guys at a time will go back into the maze and sleep for 2-4 hours while they're getting "overtime" pay.

That's the Jobs Bank that has supposedly been discontinued.  I don't think it is official, but should be gone.

One thing that made me very sad when I was working in Detroit was figuring out that most of the people that I was working with couldn't give a rat's a** about cars. Even the engineers. One guy told me that he had been offered two jobs out of college, Ford and Whirlpool. He accepted the Ford job because it paid better. There are a lot of reasons that I left, but this was a big one. I had had dreams (unfounded, as it turned out) that I'd be surrounded by car people and we'd all work together to try to put out good vehicles. It was not to be.

I could not agree more.  Only time I found car guys was in the tech center at GM and on the tech line at ford.  Never got to work for Chrysler.

This is not completely true. The average worker makes about the same amount per hour as Honda and Toyota. The big cost is the legacy issues with retirement and pension funds. This is also understandable given the time the Big 3 have been producing in the US, almost 100 years. The other manufacturers have only been producing in the US for about 20 years or so. Do the math, there is a lot more retirees for the Big 3 than any other manufacturer.

Yes, the unions do have some responsibility, but not the whole problem. Yes, they have held the automakers hostage by striking and making things difficult for the manufacturer, but they are not to blame completely.

It would really be a sad day if Chrysler did not exist. I know most of you on this forum are die hard long time Mopar guys. Wouldn't that suck that you no longer have your manufacturer in business? When I read the recent restructuring plan from Chrysler that they presented to Congress, it seems they are working hard to do the right thing and "right" the ship. It will take time, I am not sure they have it, but honestly, the people in control of the company do not want to fail. I think they are doing the best they can but the whole credit crisis and complete drop off in car sales is hard for all manufacturers, including the non Big 3.

Time will tell, but I hope they can ride the storm out and be competitive again. They do have some good products, and I would not buy anything else unless I was forced to. Which may happen in the future, but you can bet your house that my Mega Cab and Durango will be close to extinction before I sign a check to any other car maker, especially one that is not part of the Big 3!

I agree with you all the way.People dont understand the whole money issue the news makes the workers out to being paid a mint to do a job that others do for foreign companies cheaper not the case. The people who retired put in there time and should recieve the benefits they worked for someone has to pay for it so it gets tack onto the new workers. No difference then us paying  more for social security out of our paychecks knowing that it could be gone when it is our time to use it.Dont believe everythig the media says.

I would have to agree with you there.  I do believe in fair wages.  But some have gone to far with all of that.  If they would put pride into there work everything would be a lot better for sure everywhere.  I was always told to do it like you were putting your name on it  re take pride in your work for sure.  Gordon

No I'm an air traffic controller.  I thought of some other things but I thought jerk was more of a funny name to go with jeryst.

If you really are an ATC, than I apologize if my statement offended you. It did not apply to you, but I stand by my statement. Although I didnt totally agree with what Reagan did to the ATC's, I think he did it to keep the country from being paralyzed. I feel that it needs to be that way, in any area that involves the safety and/or security of the population at large. If the Big 3 are as critical to the economy as they, and many others, keep saying they are, then the ability of the UAW to bring the industry to its knees needs to be curtailed. Most of the perks they have are a result of crippling strikes that threatened to do more harm than good, so the auto makers were forced to give in to their demands.

But it goes the same for all unions. Strikes are just a legal form of blackmail that has gone way beyond what it was originally intended for, whether its blue collar or white. Teachers strike, and the school boards have no choice but to give in because once so many days are missed, the school districts lose state and federal funding, kids lose a whole years of school, etc. So the teachers get raises, property taxes go up, and many people, especially those on fixed incomes, are forced into bankruptcy, lose their homes, etc. Around here, twenty years ago, teachers made $15k a year, and it was below average for the area. Today, they are making $70k+ a year, with no end in sight, and the average income in the area is around $30k. That's nearly a 500% increase in twenty years, yet our kids are doing worse on test scores than they ever have. So what is the extra money getting us? NOTHING! Yet all you hear on the news is about how little teachers get paid. Government employees (federal, state, and city) strike, and chaos ensues because nothing gets done, so they keep getting their raises while many of the taxpayers that are paying their salaries arent getting any increases. Look at the results; record deficits for city, state, and federal budgets. Police forces get cut, along with maintenance, other services, etc. People start to flee those areas, and look for places to live where the taxes are less. They wonder why there is not enough money to do the things that they used to do and provide the services that they used to provide. Duh, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure it out, yet everyone just keeps skirting the issue.

Unions had their place at one time. I think they still have a place in making sure that work places are safe and secure, but it needs to end there, or sooner or later, as with both companies I worked for that were shut down because of union practices, they will eventually price themselves out of the market. Once costs start to get too high, in any job market, the first thing that happens, is the elimination of jobs, so in reality, unions dont save jobs, they eliminate them. It just takes a while. The current condition of the auto companies, is a perfect example.

Well i have to disagree the unions are good because they get you a fair wage and benefits and keep a boss that dont like you from just saying well i dont like your hair today your fired. Now the unions are not perfect they do protect idiots who should be fired and it takes longer.I know my husband is a union memeber and he is in one of the biggest union's in the country CWA.His union has got him and other workers good wages over the years and benefits and without the union doubt any company will give you a good wage these days or 401k's or health care.So many cut everything out and give it all to the exc's high up.We need the unions to fight for us to get a fair deal. But i do agree you dont want to get out of hand. And good union can get you what is fair and keep the company profitable and happy. You have to come to a happy medium.I hear you about the teachers in PA get 90% of their pay at retirement and makes our taxes higher.
