There is a lot of debate on which type is better, and after a lot of research for myself I believe the plasma is better, in part because I am looking at 46" or larger. The plasma has the advantage of viewing at off angles, the downside is that the plasma has a half life (something like 50,000 hours I believe) and after that half life the screen will be half as bright as it was new. Some LCD screens can have the picture repaired but a lot of them cannot like the plasma (but for different reasons of course). Which ever route you decide make sure you get 1080p and as for brands I recommend to get either a good Sony or Panasonic. From what I have seen they have the best picture quality, construction quality and will most likely last the longest.
