Stay away from the plasmas. As mentioned in the other threads, their life is half that of an LCD, they generate a ton of heat, and they are subject to "burn-in", so you cant play video games on them, leave a DVD on pause, etc. They also use a lot more electricity than an LCD. On the plus side, they have better picture and color, including deeper blacks. Also, as mentioned, get a 1080p.

As far as brand goes, just go into a store and look at them. You can really see some differences. Sometimes, the off brands are better, though. I bought a 15 inch Emerson LCD that was on sale, for my daughters bedroom three years ago, and it still looks great, even though she watches it a lot. When I compared it to the others in the store, even the name brands, it had a noticeably better picture than most, and it was a lot less expensive.

I'm an Engineer for an Audio Installation company and we just installed 80 42" LG LCD TV's at an arena. IMO, the LG's are a bit over priced for both 720 and 1080, and if you're not running an HD signal on the LCD's, the image looks like sh!t! We also have 2 LG 50" Plasmas, and 2 LG 52" Plasmas on hand for various corporate events we do... they look great if you're running a component signal (DVD, Blu-ray, etc), but again, if you're going with either LCD or Plasma, make sure your cable connection is feeding you HD if you really want your monies worth.

You should be getting advice on tvs at a tv forum. With that said I just bought a 52 inch LCD samsung. I love samsung and its the second tv I have bought from them. There is a lot of debate about  What is better between plasmas and LCDs. The viewing angles of LCDs are a lot better these days and Plasmas will last a lot longer than they used to. You should check out www.newegg.com there are a lot of reviews and you can check prices too. Good luck.

I've read the larger the screen, plasma tends to have a better picture. I have a 50" plasma and love it. The burn-in thing was an issue when plasma's first came out, not anymore.

I went with LCD and bought a 52 inch Sony. Its great and are happy with the choice. They were both close in price and the salesman said LCD is the way to go.  :bigshades:

Sounds like current generation LCD has enough pluses to offset the minuses. Texas Instruments DLP is also an option but it looks like it has a ton of bad characteristics.

Like other posters have mentioned, figure in the cost of good source material (satellite, cable etc.) as well. Looking at low quality source material on a digital tv is going to look bad.
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

dont get me wrong i love me tv picture quality is second to none but the bulb and chassis issue is the biggest drawback for me

LCDs suck w/showing blacks.  Like night or space scenes.

The old fluorescent tube LCDs were like that.  That's not true with the new LCDs, which have LED-backlit displays.  If your room is pitch black, go with a plasma.  Pioneer is the best.  If the room has daylight in it, go with an LCD.  Samsung and Sony are the best LCDs, although both have different lines that vary in quality.  Samsung, for example, makes LCDs up to 50" in Series 5, Series 6 and Series 7.  Series 7 is the best (and most expensive).  Vizio is a good "2nd tier" LCD vendor, they actually make a pretty good product at a reasonable price (especially at Sam's Club).  Their plasmas aren't that good.  For most people, LCDs are the right choice.

Keep in mind, too, that the display is (naturally) only going to show what's put into it.  If you buy an HDTV you will want to upgrade to your cable or satellite provider's HD service, because standard def TV and DVDs are going to look worse on an HDTV than they would on a conventional TV.  The picture will also not fill the screen.  Also, invest in an upconverting DVD player.  They're cheap (under $80) and they upconvert regular DVDs to "near HD" quality.  It's a real improvement, so much so that you may not even want to step to Blu-Ray discs, which are the HD equivalent of DVDs.

My personal recommendation is the Samsung Series 7 (750) 50" LCD.  I'd put it up against any HDTV.
