440 source stroker crank?
« on: December 24, 2008 - 08:20:38 PM »
I can get a brand new 415 stroke crank for a b engine from a friend of mine for 400 bucks. Sound good?  He paid 499 plus shipping. He also has a 72 400 block with a 230 casting for me.  I am thinking on building something, seems like a good start to me.

sound good to me too Except that if you order the pistons rods & crank together you can get them all balanced so it may actually cost more to do it this way depending what they charge locally for balancing

Jump all over that Alan.  Stout little 500 stroker would be neat. :burnout: :2thumbs:

He is a 400 block nut. He showed me the difference. This 400 has the bigger webbing in the main cap area. I think it's a 71 casting

only certain year 71 castings

food for the thought alan ..... "I have a 230 block cast 11/17/71 but it is not the Thick "cold weather" block, however the main webbing above the saddles 9Particularly the #3)is a bit thicker than many other 400's and most 440's I've seen."

The cold weather blocks are pretty rare, I've only seen a few "legit" ones over the years.

note how the article says got a 72 hemicuda  :smilielol:

Rob, All of the 230,s will have thicker webbing The " Legit" ones will have the thick webbing both front and back like the pics 4004, shows.

I have a book that says the cold weather blocks were cast from April 4, 1971 - Oct. 10, 1971. Pretty hard to come by.

Yeah, Neil showed me the difference in the blocks when I was at his house. He has all different kinds of 400 mopars there. He was very specific in what he wants me to have

The 230 blocks are same web thickness IIRC... but supposed to be thicker bore casting cores. This has been debunked by a lot of sonic tests...lol. They have the same core shift the other blocks have. All 400 blocks have the thicker webbing, and are the strongest BB Mopar there is in regard to the webbing failure problems.
