I thought useing a bell socket wrench to hold it. Or a longhandle wratchet. Then tighten on top. I also thought about it being in front since the fuel may not be as turbulent up there under accelleration.  I usually just add a sump in back on the bottom so when the tank is cut, it can be installed then. But with no sump. I would try the bulk head or take the 1/4 inch vent out of the 1/2 inch sending unit and just install a 3/8ths tube

I drilled out the 1/4 inch return line hole then inserted a 5/16 section of brake line, then brazed it in place. If you bend it just right, you can still install or remove it anytime without dropping the tank.  I agree with the post above that says that your return line pressure will be too high if you user the 1/4 inch line.
