400 questions
« on: December 28, 2008 - 04:31:17 PM »
I recently found a 73 newport in an old garage, The car is equiped with a 400 engine, I was planning a conversion of my challenger from a 318 to a 440 at some point in time. I do have a 440 rb that was pulled out of a motor home for the swap. Both engines I'm sure will need rebuilt. My question is, which way is the best way to go? I can get the newport for little to no money I'm sure. I don't see many car's with the 400 so I don't know if it is a good motor to invest in. Any input will be apreciated. Steve

From what I know, the 400 is mostly used to make a stroker.  As far as I can tell, if you are not going to stroke it, then you should probably go with the 440 you have.
I say, pick up the newport and drive it as original.

Get the 400 and sell it and stick with a 440 block.  The 400 is usually used to make high CID strokers due to the thick casting of the block, if that is your application then go for it if you just making a crusier steet/strip go with the hot 440.  If it were me I would stick with the 440 and sell the 400 for a profit.   :2cents:

Let me throw this back at you...

How do you plan to use the car? Just a Sunday cruiser, or maybe something more serious?

You ever drive a good high compression, good headed 400?  They will hold there own.   You said you have to build it. Either one needs pistons

And if you are gonna build it, you might as well stroke it.  400s lend themselves very well to a stroker setup...    :2thumbs:

If you do decide to go with the 400 then read this:

Why 400s are used for stroker builds: 1) They have the biggest bore of any MOPAR bigblock; 2) in relation to their crankshaft bearing bores, they have thicker main webs than 440s; 3) when you are finished, they still look like a stock low-deck bigblock, and will fool a lot of people that are looking for the ID pad to tell them  you have serious inches; and 4) they are dirt cheap to buy; even cheaper than most 440s will be. I like the idea of building smaller engines myself, but the stroker won't go away any time soon. The old axiom, "there's no replacement for displacement;" always holds true. Build either engine into a stroker, as the money to build a stock stroke engine is not much less than a well-thought-out stroker. Cylinder heads now exist to feed monster cubic inches, and it is easy to get 1-1.5 hp per cubic inch without stressing the engine. I would keep the 400 and stroke it, and sell the 440 to somebody that wants a heavier engine when they are done building their stroker.

I think I would also consider the 400 car as a total parts donator... everything from the pulleys and brackets to kickdown and driveshaft... So if this is a cruiser car, I'd consider a simple swap of everything. All depends on what you want to do, and what you have to spend.

To add to the 400 "plusses" the B wedge fits better in an A body in terms of clearance for headers... I also agree with not going past a 3.915 stroke (470ish cubes) in them.

the 400 with 440 crank & rods will eat a 440 with similar combo, it will come up to 451 CI but will also reduce the rotating mass by 7 lbs allowing it to rev easier & with the same parts will be faster , however doing the same thing to the 440 & taking it up to 512 CI works just as well

:iagree:  I got well into the 7's using a 400 block with B-1 heads in a Road Runner body with stock dimensions. Not exactly the most aerodynamic car.

I just wanted to jump in on this rather than starting a new thread as it applies here to this one. Interesting info. I have a 400 on an engine stand in my garage and also a 440. I was planning on stroking the 400. My question is: Are all the external engine parts such as brackets, pulley hubs, water pump, power steering ect interchangeable between the two engines?? :clueless: Thanks guys!
