Winter Project- trunk floor replacement
« on: December 29, 2008 - 08:41:55 PM »
Well I decided to take on a trunk floor replacement project this winter rather than just putting the car in storage as I normally do . Thought I would share a few pictures of the "before" and progress to date. Hopefully you can see from the pictures, that the floor was in need of replacement as it was rusty , had a few holes, and was poorly repaired by somebody else previously with bondo and black undercoating.
The first two pictures are of before I started disassembly. The third picture is of the initial cut I made, I kind of just took the center of the trunk pan out with the idea being once that was out I could stand in the trunk to work on cutting the remaining spot welds.
The fourth picture is of the car with the entire center section removed.
The fifth picture is just an overall shot of the rear of the car - under reconstruction in December 2008.
I am leaving the tailpipes in place at this point because they are welded to the rear of the mufflers and I don't want to get too many projects going at one time - has something to do with $$ I guess.
I have purchased a one piece center section and both sides of the trunk extensions.
Hope to post more pictures as I go along - wish me luck!

Great start, are you going with a one or two piece replacement?

I put a one piece in mine last summer. Nice to have a solid trunk, lucky for me the floors are all solid.

2/19/2009 - A few more pics and progress update. I was able to reuse the original gas tank braces and after running them through a sand blast cabinet , they cleaned up pretty good. The second pic shows the braces welded onto the bottom of the new trunk floor pan. The third pic is of a test fit of the floor in the car. I was told that you could only replace a one piece trunk floor by removing the tail panel. Not true, I found that if you remove the rear frame cross piece from the end of the frame rails, there is just enough room between the end of the rails and the tail panel to snake the new floor up through and kind of flop it into the car. The next step is to start drilling holes in the new floor pan for the plug welds and to continue to clean up the rest of the underside of the car. Have to pick my work days however, as it is cold in the garage!
