Any one got a DVR suggestion?
« on: December 31, 2008 - 03:44:08 PM »
I'd like to get a stand-alone DVR to replace my VCR.  I don't want to pay a monthly fee to cable company or TIVO, any advice?

Yes, but I really can't see paying an extra $15/month just to record TV.  I can't believe there isn't a simple solution.  It must be a legal issue, because I can't find a single recorder with a HD and a tuner.

its not a legal issue its a greed $$$ issue  :money:

its new and Popular so they are going to charge you for it if they can.  :o

I would go to your local PC store and ask about tuning in cable tv on a computer set up for dvr.

It won’t unscramble any pay channels but it should be able to tune in just like a regular tv.
If you have to have a box for cable good luck working around that.
I have sat. its only 7 dollars so I just pay it.
It’s crazy but ya got to pay to play. :money:

Your 1st problem would be that if there was one with a tuner it would not interpret the cable signal from the cable company that, at least in my area, forces you to rent from them to get HD programming.
At $13 per month I thought it a pretty good deal as the programming of what to record & replay of live TV feature is all part of the same converter box & would take at least a couple, if not more, years to pay for a DV-recorder.  :2cents:

It doesn't add up for me.  I just want to record basic TV, for $100-$150 you can buy a tuner card and 100g of memory.
At $15/month I will spend $180 every year (and they never raise the prices LOL).

The trick is I need to figure out exactly what is needed and how to do it.  I don't have cable boxes in each room, just my media room for the HD channels.

I'd just buy a VCR if I could, guy laughed at me when I asked where they were at store, they don't carry them!

There are plenty of set top box solutions to do what you want. I have a Phillips unit with built-in DVD burner. It has HDMI and upconverts signals to 1080i. You can freeze broadcast TV, schedule recordings, etc. You can find these and similar units on Craigslist pretty cheap.

I might be able to help if you want to build a media center. It's fairly simply if you are not wanting to watch HD(its not tooo bad if you want to just some limitation). The best free media center is MediaPortal but Microsoft's is a little more stable/user friendly. Here is a link http://www.team-mediaportal.com/.

IF your not needing High Def & Hard Drive there are lots of options.... We've had a VCR/DVD combo for a couple of years... Works great to record stantard cable.

Here's one for $129

You'll still need the cable/satellite box, but this is what I use. Get it while you still can.

Thx for all the replies, I'm going to have to do some reading to see what makes sense for me.
