    Radiator yoke blackout

    How do I do it and what kind of paint do I use? I wish I could rattle can it and have it last but if that is not the case I want to do it right. Am I right in thinking that the paint is flat black? Thanks in advance for any experiences or suggestions.

    I use SEM self etching black primer, I don't know if it's concours acceptable but it looks pretty close to what I just sanded off an all original paint car.  to do it proper you need to do a crumby job with overspray, I couldn't bring myself to do it  so I masked the cowl off and did a careful job behind the grill.

    I paint the bottom of the rad supprt , the hood latch support in the center  & the area around the rad out to the headlights , I have never masked it off

    For the touch up you want to perform, i suggest just using a rattle can.  Just make sure it is a high temp paint and you could use a semi gloss as it will cure into a dull Black, not quite Flat because of the heat.....

    Let me ask you guys this. At work we have a water based flat black paint. It is as cheap as they come. I am not saying I want to use it but what kind of paint do I need to be looking for? I do know that the face marking paint I am talking about does a good job as a guide coat paint.

    I have not heard the term yoke used before.  Is this the water neck that the radiator hose attaches to, or are you painting the whole Radiator ?

    Water base paint can be good if it is a heat resistant paint suitable for the job.

    Radiator support is what I am referring to Ken. It includes the parts that Neil lists as needing the blackout paint. I dont know where I got the term but I know I didnt make it up lol.

    I've looked at a lot of survivor cars at shows throughout the years (even before they were called "survivors") and went with Krylon Ultra-Flat Black. I did the core support and hood latch tray support on my 71 Charger ten years ago and it still looks good. I have T/A survivor pics, but they are paper photos and will need to be scanned. Some of the more purist resto guys will probably frown on this, but if you're not doing a 100 point, $100,000 car, it might be what you need.

    2 more for the penny jar.

    I use Krylon Semi-Flat Black and do not mask. It's supposed to overspray.

    I have a 73 Cuda,B5 that is in for paint now.Was this blackout done on all years and colors?

    It was supposed to be done on all cars except the ones with dark colors like TX9 or B7. I dont know if B5 called for it or not but I think so.
