I would think the 440 eng & the 727 trans would be a desirable swap if it is still in the NY.  Even w/o mods, it would move the Challenger quite well.   Ovmf

When I was in High school (20+ years ago?!?! :-[) I bought a 68 New Yorker to swap the 440 into my 73 Challenger. Problem was, I didn't have enough money left to buy everything else I needed, so I sold it. Just as well, I would have killed myself in it anyway...

The Chysler interchange manual is less than helpful. Note that the manual helps you identify identical parts across platforms. If there are even small differences across years or bodies, the part in question won't be listed as being interchangable. Also, there isn't a lot of informaiton to help you figure out what the differences are.

Here's a couple of examples:

1) The steering gearboxes in '72 used a different size Pitman arm than the other years, but the rest of the box is the same. In other words, you can bolt in a '73 box and arm no problem, but the book lists the '72 box as not being interchangable with the other year boxes. That is true, but the boxes with the Pitman arms are interchangable.

2) The trunk deck on the '70 Cuda is listed as not being interchangable with the other year decks. I believe that the difference is the use of trim studs on the later decks. The remaining dimensions and fit is identical.

Had a '68 New Yorker - swapped the points for electronic ignition and that thing would cruise the whole family with no problem. Good for moving say an army but not much to look at.
It loved to cruise streets or freeway and sure could guzzle the fuel. My son is still mad I sold it. :-\

The steering gear is the same from 1972 and down. the difference being the pitman arm spline diameter.
