advice on 383 rebuild
« on: January 04, 2009 - 06:06:17 PM »
Coronet is coming along, eng is in machine shop everything cheked out good but it's was bored 60 over last rebuild in late 70's.

As of right now, heads getting resurfaced, new harden seats new valves, retainers. Block honed cranked turned and polished, new bearings. rings ect.

Im swapping the 2 barrel intake for 4 so any recomendations on things like carb\intake cam.

I have the stock set of exhaust manifolds off my old 440-6 cuda, their retored would they work on this 383?

The exhaust manifolds will fit fine, and work pretty well on a 383. The flow potential is not a bad match for the smaller engine, and good pipes will answer for the rest of it. Also, the factory Hi-po manifolds are quieter than headers, and look really cool. What is your planned compression ratio? This will affect a lot of your other choices, and also affect your operating range and flow needs. The stock heads will limit you to about 400-450 BHP, but that's really a lot for a street car. Do you plan on using a high-stall torque convertor, if it's an automatic? Will the car have deep gears? Answers to these questions will help a lot in sorting out your combination. Expect to use a dual-plane intake, and a 750CFM carburetor.

sweet, thanks. As far as compression 9.5-1 is what I thought. Gears will be stock 3.23 with maybe a 500 over stock converter?

Are you reusing the pistons?

Yeah, re-grooving new, wrist pins and such, bad idea?? They new to the last rebuild when the went -60 over and machine shop said they were fine.

Sounds good, so there should be some easier choices for you later. Be certain of your compression ratio- assumptions can hurt you. If your compression ratio is 9.5:1, you can use a split-pattern camshaft with about 224-225 degrees intake/230 degrees exhaust duration at .050" valve lift. Shorter overlap will give you a little more snap, so try to keep that around 74 degrees or so. Lift should be close to .500" lift, with 1.5:1 rockers. The Edelbrock Performer and the MOPAR M-1 dual-plane are both good intakes, and I recommend vacuum-operated secondaries for the street. A Thermoquad is great in this setup, if you can land a good one. The Holley, Demon, and Edelbrock carbs are all also good choices.

It's fine if the bores and pistons are fine.  Just asking.
