Another bad challenger movie
« on: January 06, 2009 - 08:32:42 PM »
Like most every one on here, I will watch just about any movie that has a Challenger in it.  The last two I have watched crashed up both of the cars.  The bucket list was the first one, the death proof was the second one, did Vanishing Point make it mandatory that all Challengers get crashed when their in a movie???  Why cant the destroy cars that are more plentiful??? :2cents:

Don't forget 'Terminal Velocity' where the white '70 Challenger R/T is trashed.  It's director is the son of the director of 'Vanishing Point'.

The worst thing about 'Death Proof' was the creation of a Challenger Sedan.  It had window frames around the front window for the stunt they do.

The Challenger wasn't crashed in the first Vanishing Point, a Camaro was used for the crash scene. I'm not sure about the made for TV version of the movie though.

I do remember someone telling me (a mate who met Zoe Bell at an event they were both attending, who spend half an hour interrogating the poor woman) that all the challengers destroyed in death proof were badly rusted out and probably not worth saving.

I dont know if anyone can confirm this?

What about the poor MoPars in the original Gone in 60 Seconds, they crushed a red 72-74 Challenger and throughout the movie cars in the background of the long chase scene are MoPars being hit be rubbish trucks etc, from memory. Vanishing Point (the original) as mentioned used 5 Challengers in total, all of which were (apparently) returned to Chrysler as they were on loan. A 67 Camaro hit the dozers. But that movie is different, so is the original Gone in 60 Seconds, it's like using a late model car in today's movies. No one cares when they crash the new Mustangs because as of today, they aren't classic collectables. ;)

Death Proof and the 96 (aired 97) Fox remake of Vanishing Point are movies to curse at/about for their classic car destruction. A 68 Charger and Challenger (year unknown) were destroyed. The actual movie cars are still in good condition. Thing is, they destroyed these cars, it's to late, done, dusted, finito, so IMO we may as well watch it so these poor cars never died in vain. There will never be enough viewers to make them think: "Hey they like classic cars being thrashed" so we may as well watch, for the sake of the cars that died - R.I.P.

In the Aussie movie Running on Empty the Challenger at the end appears to smash into a wall but didn't as that car still exsists in Western Australia last I heard. It did get damaged in the movie as there wasn't any back-up cars.   :stomp:
Also the second Fast & Furious movie had a Challenger in it and it got trashed to.    :villagers:

If I'm not mistaken, this car, or one of the cars used in the movie with the window frames, was sold on Ebay for about $11k.

If I remember correctly, they were actually '70 or '71 Challengers with '72 front and tail ends grafted on.  Reason being is a long time ago I freeze framed the VIN #s of the vehicles, like when they were taking off the door tag or when he was writing on the clipboard, and could decifer the VIN.

:thinkerg:  Just checked the old thread...

Both cars were '70 Challengers.  One unfortunately was a '70 R/T with a 440 made in LA.  :'(

"-the manufacture date from the sticker on the side of the drivers door shows a manufature year as "1969", not sure of the month.
VIN#=JS23U0E114291.  Plug it into your VIN decoder.  You get 1970 Dodge Challenger, Special-R/T, 440 375hp 4BBL made in LA  Nice car!!!!

The car they stole to replace it:
-VIN#=JH23L0E142751.  Which comes out to 1970 Dodge Challenger, High Price Class, 383 290hp 2BBL made in LA"

Why cant the destroy cars that are more plentiful???

Its a combination of coolness and budgetary limitations. Obviously these are cool cars and buying a pack of them at $20k a pop is cheaper than buying a fleet of Ferraris or Aston Martins to perform the same stunt work at $75k a pop plus dealing with potential import issues and problems.
