Rebuild Master Cylinder & Brake Booster Or Buy New?
« on: January 09, 2009 - 12:54:40 AM »
I just made the unpleasant discovery that my master cylinder is leaking where it attaches to the brake booster.  Is there a rebuild kit for these items or should I just replace them?  Either way, where is the best place to get rebuild kits or new parts?  Just in case it matters, the car is a 1971 Cuda (not Hemi) with disc brakes.  Thanks.

You know, I was going to buy a cardone M/C and booster from Autozone but wasn't sure about the quality.  Thanks for the heads up!
Below is my original which is leaking vacuum and fluid.

Hood, Your car probably having all the OE parts would be worth the few extra dollars to have them rebuilt & refinished properly... Contact Booster Dewey 503.238.8882, I don't know if he does master cylinders.

You may want to rebuild it yourself to save some money, assuming this is for the sake of originality.  Master cylinders like most other brake hydraulics are surprisingly simple to rebuild.  As long as the cylinder bore isn't too worn or corroded, a rebuild kit and light honing with a drill should be all you need.  If you dont care about that, a rebuilt one will be about the same or less money than the kit.

The Cardone master cylinder I have on mine is a rebuilt factory unit.   Rock Auto carries both parts. You can get the additional discount # here>

If you buy the Cardone, is the booster painted black?  The pic on the parts website shows it gray, but it could just be a generic photo.

I've decided to get the booster rebuilt by Dewey, and I'm getting a new factory-style master cylinder from Bill Rolik.  The Cardone stuff doesn't look like it is the right color from their picture.   Plus I will be keeping my original booster.  Price is about the same either way.
