Changing 73 Challenger Bumpers to 72 Look
« on: January 10, 2009 - 05:02:34 PM »
I'm a little embarassed to be asking this because I should know, but hey, here goes.

I want to move my Bumpers closer to the body on my 73 Challenger. I know I need the 70-72 brackets, but...

1. Will the front brackets bolt right onto the frame rails or will I need to machine additional holes/slots?

2. Do I eliminate the rubber fillers altogether? I'm pretty sure "yes" on the fronts (replace with small, black j-shaped rubber ones on inside bumper ends). Maybe "yes" on the rears and use the long, steel filler like on the 70 cars?

3. I'm 99% sure on this one....eliminate inner steel bumpers, front & rear.

4. Are 70-74 bumpers all the same except for jack slots? Same width?

Does anyone have pics of a 72?

Thanks!

having done this the front brackets bolt on
the rubber fillers are removed front & rear
the inner steel liners are also removed
I believe 74 bumpers have different mounting holes at least on the rear
 no pix

We did the swap on my brother's 73 Challenger, as I had a couple of extra sets of 70-72 bumpers and brackets. It was a direct swap no modifications at all. The 70-71 bumpers have no slots as they have a hook on the jack that goes under the bumper and the 72 has the slots. I think late 71 cars might have the slots as well.

Front is straight forward like Chryco said. Your old front bumper will bolt onto the 70-72 bracket with 1 extra hole in it on each side (fill with bumper bolt).

For the rear - your bumper's holes will not match the 70-72 rear bracket. Some guys have cut the original bracket and re-fabbed it - to move it in. If you need a new rear bumper then decide between 70-72 ones (bumper jack provision) and get the 70-72 brackets and bolt it together. Or if you are going to paint your old bumper, you could drill it to match the 70-72 brackets.
