my first kill
« on: May 21, 2002 - 05:35:08 PM »
;D i put that grin there cause it always makes me smile  my first real race came after i had bought a 70 plymouth fury1 it was an old police car that had a wicked 383 in it my test ride in the car scared me - i guess cause i had a 67 catalina before w/400 - so when i came back from the test ride and bought the car i had to take it out and get used to it, it had a certified speedo and loved to cruise at 80 also it sported a sure-grip cause when you put your foot down both tires spun hard the trans also would shift into drive very quickly unless you were nailing it then it wound out each gear one other thing was it had a hood w/dual hood scoops that read 383 on them. a couple of weeks after i got it i took it downtown and cruising along when a 66-67? chevelle came up he had fender badges that read 396 a hood scoop AND (lol) a big chrome tach on his dash i was sure he wouldn't want to race an old 4-door plymouth but he reved his engine and looked at the light i dropped the fury's trans into low and i saw him put his in 1st when the light turned green he was on it hard (i wasn't going to be fooled and have him turn the corner and laugh)-so basically i LET him start off before i nailed the fury so he was out in front by a good car length but by the time he shifted to 2nd i was side by side w/him the same thing happened when he shifted to 2nd he got out by about a 1/2 car length but by the time he wound that gear up i was just a little ahead by the top of 3rd gear we were still side by side then i shifted to drive(no i didn't forget 2nd) and kept it to the floor i dont know if he had a 4th or not -it didn't matter i was pulling away and he couldn't keep up i can't remember how fast we were going and it's a wonder no cross traffic went through a red light - kids were always running red lights downtown - just then up ahead a light turned red and we had to shut down at the red light this guy looks at the fury and says "good race" i nodded yes and THEN he turned i never saw that guy down there again ..that was great and since then i have been a mopar believer!

Awesome story RTSE, I recall scenes like that when I was in my late teens and early twenties!  ;D

Now you have some idea of Mopar history! It used to be much more viscious in the 60's and 70's!  :o I got to see "some" of those too!  :P

Good going!  ;)

Mopar to ya!

thanks wedge...i think my first racing experiences was when i was 4 my dad had a 49 chevy that had a 1969 small block chevy corvette engine/trans/rear end in it we lived in cal at the time and i remember he would always ask if i wanted to go fast..lol  away we'd go he later said he could pull the front wheels off the ground ...funny he said the only car that beat him was a mopar  8)

Good story, rtse. 8)
I had a buddy that built a mean 440 for his 74 Fury cop car, and that thing was fast!
We were cruisin up this long hill while on a road trip, and some guy in a hopped up Impala starts dicing with us.  Give me a break!  Boat against boat, baby!  I guess you can picture what happens next! ;D

;) You young guys sure know how to bring back memories, haven't done any racing in quite some time, let's face it , the tickets cost more and the insurance premiums are higher. But I guess you could say I won one just the other day when this (pardon the expression) mouthy young jerk came up to me after the car show and in no certain terms let me know he wanted to race my Charger. I just asked him."you got a clear title to that '68 Chevele?" He said yes and asked me why? Now the old man here knew he had a "dog stock 350 2 bbl and knew he really didn't have a chance anyway, and I said "I"ll go title for title, because if I can't beat your piece of s**t then I don't want this mopar if it would get beat by that thing". He gave me some vulgar compliment and walked away. I guess I did't use very good tact or judgment but this wet a** kid just ticked me off! Another reason I don't race anymore, these ole reflexes are just not as quick as they used to be and there is a long swallow between those four gears on that stock tranny. It's up to you younger guys to put those phorbes and chebbies in their place, hehehe ::)

:)Wise words white satin, i agree about insurance/tickets  :( not to mention accidents, but there is something about getting behind the wheel of a quick mopar that makes a guy loose all sense! ;D ....hehe and to see the disbelief on another guy's face as you power by him is priceless also i love the feeling i get in my stomach when i know a race is about to happen..
