Another New Guy
« on: May 21, 2004 - 08:12:56 PM »
Hi everyone.  I just registered in the forum.  I see a lot of great lookin' cars here and some very knowledgeable folks.

Back in October, I purchased a '70 Challenger RT/SE with a 440, 4spd, and Dana 60 with 3.54 gears.  It's 1 of 142 built.  My wife and I drove from New Jersey to Michigan, bought the car, then drove it straight home!  All in all it was about a 33 hr round trip.  Boy were we tired!!

The engine and rear are original, but the trans may have been replaced at some point.  I can't tell because the ID pad is very worn.  Does anyone know how to decode the date code on the Hemi 4spds??

In any case, the car is in dire need of a restoration.  Needs a little bit of frame repair and a lot of sheetmetal repair (floors, fenderwells, rear valance, decklid, hood, etc).

Here are some poor quality pictures when the car was still in Michigan.  I'll keep you posted on the teardown and restoration of this vehicle.  It may take 5 or 10 years, but it will get done.

Look forward to talking w/ya!

Welcome to the board :)

Looks like you have an awesome starting point for your restoration, and it's something that's worth doing right.

How bout the details like fender tag codes, do you have a build sheet, and better pics ;)

Glad to have you here.

Welcome to cc.com Craig!! Great place here for all us MOPAR admirerrrs!  :)   Your car looks SSSSHHWWWEEEEETT!!  All the body lines seem to be pretty straight!  Whats the floors look like?? I know what the Michigan weather can do to a great mopar! (actually we only have 2 seasons here in Michigan . . . winter and construction   :P ) What color do you have planned for your ride?? I'm sure if you post your trans numbers down in the tech area, someone will decode them.  Definitely need to give us some more current pics! (we all love them pics!) Welcome again and thats gonna be one hot car!!  ;D  ;D

(helpful note: shrink your pics down to around 500 - 700 pixels wide and they'll fit alittle better)

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!  The car came off the factory line in Hemi Orange.  Somewhere along the way it was repainted Plum Crazy.  I'll be restoring it back to original.  There's no build sheet.  The VIN on the dash matches the cowl, which matches the radiator support and fender tag.  The tag reads as follows:

(Starting from the bottom left):

E86   440-4BBL - 375 hp
D21   Heavy duty 4spd manual trans (Hemi 4spd) w/reverse light.
JS29   J = Challenger; S = Special; 29 = SE (Special Edition
U0B   U = 440 V8; 0 = 1970; B=Hamtramck assembly plant
162174   62,174th car built
EV2   Exterior color - Hemi Orange
HRX9   Interior - High leather vinyl - black
OOO   Upper door color - None - all black
A16   Build date - October 16, 1969
068357   Build sequence number
V1X   Full vinyl roof
A33   Dana 60 Track Package
A62   Ralley instrument cluster
B51   Power assist disc brakes
C16   Console w/wood grain panel - w/bucket seats
C26   Overhead roof consolette w/formed headliner
C55   Bucket seats
G33   Outside LH remote racing mirror
J45   Hood pins w/lanyards
M21   Roof drip rail mouldings
M31   Belt and hood mouldings
N41   Dual exhaust without tips
N42   Chrome exhaust tips
N85   Tachometer
R22   AM Radio w/8 Track
V6X   Longitudinal stripe
YO5   Built to US specs
26   26 inch radiator
EN2   End of tag

No power steering, power windows, or power seats.  In fact, very little options for an SE, which I thought was strange.  It doesn't even have the fliptop gas cap (bummer).  It looks like whoever originally ordered this car from the factory wanted to save on some weight and have a lot of fun.  I tracked down the 3rd owner (I'm the 5th owner), and he told me some interesting stories about this car.  Stay tuned!

Welcome to the board Craig!

That'll definitely be one sweet ride when you're done! Do you have a website that you're showing your restoration on? How about pictures? Did we mention we love pictures? :)

Welcome Craig. Sweet car, man. My RT/SE came from the Royal Oak, MI area but most of it's sheetmetal will have to be replaced (although my dash pad has nary a crack) - glad your starting point is much better. How is your headliner? From my limited experience with mine, the most difficult pieces for the SE and the Gran Coupe can be those associated with the interior followed closely by the SE sail panel emblems. We're here to help. Just let us know how. And the more pics the merrier.

Thanks!  The headliner is pretty beat and will need to be replaced.  Dashpad is near perfect, but faded, as well as the interior panels.  You're so right about trying to find certain parts for an SE or Gran Coupe.  I'm trying to find those trim pieces that go along the back of the hood and fenders.  I'm sure they'll pop up somewhere.

Welcome aboard Craig.  Looks like you have a decent starting point and one killer drive train to work with. I'm also in New Jersey, if you need and help or have any questions just post them on the board!
