Interesting Off-Set Dowels
« on: January 12, 2009 - 03:34:13 PM »
While dealing with my TTi header/mini-starter fit problem, I came across this off-set dowel design my RobbMc.  Thought I'd pass on the link so you were aware of it.  I haven't used them, but it looks like a good design that could save alot of heart burn.  FYI

You can buy offset dowels thru Summit or Jegs also. They are needed if your are dialing in a Keisler trans. Not a bad idea on any trans also. They want center line no more than .005.
The proceedure is not hard, you need a  magnetic dial indicator and some time.

I've only seen 1 factory bellhousing far enough off to require these.  Every blow-proof I've check has been way off, 1 was .075" and had to make some custom dowels with a lathe.  Attention to these kind of details is what makes for a smooth shifting setup.

Browell Bellhousings makes bellhousing alignment tools so that you don't have to use a dial indicator to check the alignment.  It took me about 2 minutes to check my bellhousing alignment on my Camaro when I put my 406 in.  I think the tool was around $100 bucks or so.  Well worth it to me.  I know they sell them for gm and chrysler applications, but I'm not sure about fords.

Very cool product from Browell.  I recommend the RobbMc offsets, I've used them on three Tremec installations and they are easy to dial in.  Well worth the money.  McLeod also makes/made some in the past.
