Please help on the Bumble Bee Stripe
« on: January 12, 2009 - 05:36:37 PM »
 :pullinghair:

Does anyone have concrete proof that the BB stripe was painted first before the body color?  I have seen soooo much on this and I want to make it right on my car.  We are getting ready to paint it soon.   All help is most appreciated.

Thanks!!!!

I think Barry does, and I am pretty positive the stripe was painted first and then taped off. I know you want a more conrete answer then that, but I can't see the stripe being painted after it wouldn't make since.

I've heard the stripe was painted on first too.  :grinyes:

this is what I understand , Stripe first
But on my car the stripe was Definatly painted Over the body color , now my car is very early so the production method May have changed later on

Stripe first.

Think of it this way, at the factory they could paint the back of the car the stripe color with no masking.

Once that paint was cured, they could mask off the stripe area with very little masking involved.

If they painted the body first, they would have had to mask off close to 99% of the car, a total waste of masking supplies, time & labor.

There is an engineering drawing for the stripe. (one of the ones Chrysler said I can no longer share because they have a vendor putting them into book form to sell)

The measurements for the rear stripe layout were taken from the front of the cowl before the front & rear glass was installed.

Sorry about hijacking the thread, but Barry do you know when that book will be out and the rough price will be.

Barry:
I think his question was whether there was a bulletin (or work instruction) that documents the procedure for painting the BB stripe.  (To show that it was painted before the body).  AFAIK, there is not such a document, but the engineering drawing is an excellent reference for the overall dimensions and placement (thanks again for helping me with that a couple years ago).

The masking explanation provided above is enough to convince me that the BB stripe was painted first.  And I think the pictures of that green car (below) proved it also, right? (That picture is what I used as a guide to make the shape of mine look 'correct')

Anyway, when you paint your own car, the decision is up to you.  I highly doubt that anyone will notice whether the stripe was painted before or after the car body.  For mine, the only thing that made sense was to paint the car first, and then the stripe (opposite of the factory).  That way, we could take our time and lay out the pinstriping tape, to 'eyeball' the look of the stripe.  Then, we did not need to worry about how to protect the BB stripe while painting the car, or how to ensure that paint got between the large/small stripes properly.

While carefully removing the factory paint on the rear of my car it was obvious that the bronze was on top of the Purple paint but my car was painted in Aug 69 so .... :dunno:
