Second Interview, First Offer...
« on: January 13, 2009 - 09:05:37 AM »
Hey all,

Just got back in from Jacksonville, FL last night.  Had a hurried trip South but a very good interview.  It could lead to a permanent assignment in Florida - I'm buried in a personal debate as to whether I want to make such a profound relocation.  I'd go from "20 minutes" to "20 HOURS!"

Just before leaving, I had a voicemail from the first interview in Pittsburgh - calling to extend an offer.  Haven't spoken with them yet (on the agenda for today) but I have to admit that with 11 months of experience, a likely "two-for-two" success ratio is pretty amazing.

As always, I'll keep you guys informed.  (I did already notify my potential employer in Florida that I'll be traveling to Pennsylvania in early July of 2009!  He said he might came along with me!  He used to own a 1968 340 Barracuda, and a Dodge Demon!)

The problem comes along when it's 115 degrees outside with 110% humidity and the last thing you want to do is sit in Florida traffic behind the heat of an 8-Liter V10...  It would actually get too HOT to drive the Viper.

(But yes, walking outside after returning to the Columbus Ohio Airport, I found myself buttoning up my coat going, "Man Florida sure seems nice right now...")

Jeff,

Come on down!  It's not all that bad during the summer, sure it's hot and humid, but you get to drive your cars all year long.  You just have to becareful when you choose a place to live that's not that far from work or be aware of the bad traffic areas.

It's 81 in Miami today. Tonight it will be in the 50's. Sounds like good Viper weather to me.

FY1443433:

I heard from one source and also read through a city data site that crime is pretty bad down there - well above average with fewer cops per citizen than the national average.  Lots of car theft...  What's your take on that?

The job would be Southeast of Jacksonville, and I was looking towards Eastern Jax or Jax Beaches for a place to live.

Jax beach, ah yes!    That's a very nice place to live. But very pricey in certain areas. I used to live there in 1971. I lived right on the beach in a nice 2 story apartment.

I work around there often too. You will have crime spots no matter where you live around a big city. But the place you are thinking of, there will be some good areas where that wont be much of a problem :2thumbs:

Real estate is down in Fl right? I would think it would be a good time to move there, but am guessing that each area is different given each local economy.

That can be a little hot.  My friend has a Shelby Cobra replica with a 496ci engine and he can't drive the car in anything much more than 75 degrees due to the engine heat...  :faint:

Jax traffic SUX. I don't know how worse it could get trying to drive across town. And a cop at every turn. Ask anyone from Jax and they will tell you the worst thing about it is the traffic and the 8 million traffic cops.

I don't think they want the words fun and driving to go together.

It sounds like they need to get the cops off the highway and into the city where all the murders and assaults and robberies are taking place...

I've got a little bit of time to think about it, but I'm really leaning on just staying put where I'm at.  I'm pretty well established up here and really just don't feel like undergoing that major of a lifestyle change...
