Single to duel exhaust Question
« on: January 13, 2009 - 05:45:22 PM »
I am about to switch over to duel exhaust and was going to put on a new rear Valance from Goodmark. My questions is, do I need different brackets to mount that valance or is the single exhaust valance the same as the duel exhaust. Need to know before I get into this mess. Is this a plug and play exchange?  :sly:

Should be plug and play

Did you buy your mufflers and resonators yet? I found a guy who makes repops for about 1/3 the price of "the other guys". Will have to dig up his e-mail address.

Steve

OK, here's the scoop. I got mufflers, resonators and over-axle pipes. I don't know if he makes headpipes or not.

I don't think he has a website, but does sell on fleabay sometimes.

Would like info if you can find it. I was going to go with turbo mufflers, or flowmasters but I will intertain options.

If you are entertaining muffler options I highly recommend Magnaflow mufflers. I have run them on both big block and small block cars and absolutely love them.

I may have made a little error. I just got a new set of stainless steel exhaust tips in 2 inch. I see that Magnaflow does a header back kit for the challenger but from what I can see it is only 2.5 inch. What to do? Does anyone make a good manifold back kit for the challenger in 2 inch. Want a good base tone (Magnaflow, flowmasters, exc.), will do unpolished stainless if that is an option.

I would go 2.5 inch and then put a reducer at the tip. That's what I did on my Challenger. TTI offers complete manifold back kits, but I believe they are for only high performance manifolds, like 440, hemi and 70 340, but may be wrong. I have not installed the magnaflow header back kit for the Challenger, but did for a cuda and their kit is not designed for stock tips, it is designed to use the tips they provide and dump below the valance. Not sure if the Challenger kit is easier to deal with due to the location of the factory tips, but I'll bet work would have to be done to the tailpipes to utilize the stock tips. Other than that I loved the 2.5 kit I installed in the cuda.

In that case I may just have a local guy do the exhaust. That way I can get the mufflers I want and make the tips work. As I really want to retain the stock duel exhaust look at the valance.

There's a shop in every town that has a cheapo tubing bender that kinks the crap out of the exhaust pipe with accordian bends. They are the ripples left on the inside of the bends that restrict the flow. They will do the job cheap and you will have duals, but don't expect the car to run much better (if at all) and don't expect it to last long because the tubing they use is cheap crap made for easy bending and you will have no crossover tube.

The right way to upgrade your exhaust is to use mandrel bent aluminized tubing (NO KINKS IN THE BENDS), like the kits that TTI sell. They only make them in 2.5" and bigger because that's the minimal size you need for a V-8 engine to get maximum benefit. This is a case where you will definately only get what you pay for.  :grinyes:

I'm going to be changing mine over in the next few months. All my pipes are 2-1/4 as well as the resonators and muffler INLETS. The only thing 2" is the outgoing end of the mufflers and the tips. This is how the cars were originally, but don't ask me why.

I have not test fit anything from Kevin yet, but I can tell you that his bends look good and not kinky.

I still need to buy the backmost muffler hangers and then I think I'm ready to go, weather permitting. (Gonna be COLD here for a few days...heck, the whole Winter has been cold.)

I'm changing from a custom bent setup on a 440 car, so when I'm done I'm sure it will be quieter (this is what I want), but I am expecting a slight drop in power. I'd rather have less noise and a more correct look.

40 years ago 2" tailpipes were the hot setup because they were cheap to produce and easy to fit on the cars. The Mufflers and crossover or X pipe have more to do with how loud the exhaust is than the size of the pipes.

I should have mentioned that my current setup is a little cobbed together and has only mufflers and no resonators. It has the mufflers under the seats and factory tips on the ends of the pipes. No heat shields next to the gas tank either. The current setup has hangers from the frame tie-downs.  :eek4:

I'm pretty confident that the current mufflers are inadequate for the sound reduction I'm trying to achieve. I'm not looking to make a perfect show car, but want to get closer than I am now!  Also trying to get maximum bang-for-buck. :swaying:

Great info THANKS!!
I wondered if I where to get mufflers before going to the shop to have it done. What style would be best. Oval, round, center tube mufflers, offset tube muffers? I will likely leave that up to the shop I go to but I wanted to ask before incase I run across a set.

under the seat you need oval mufflers , offset inlet & center out
if you use the mufflers beside the gas tank as well center in & out round were used
