hood scoop in rain or snow
« on: January 14, 2009 - 03:45:43 PM »
I want to put a six-pack scoop on my 2001 Ram and am wondering if anyone can tell me of good or bad experiences of an open hood scoop in rain or snow.  I know the six-pack is an awesome scoop for air intake and ram air effect but I don't want to force water into the engine in a rainstorm.

This doesn't help with a new vehicle, but the T/A scoop is open on my Challenger and I drive it in the rain with no problems.

The problem with doing this on a modern car is it that you have a mass airflow sensor in the intake ductwork.  Water and dirt will damage the very delicate resistor sensing elements in the sensor.  They are usually pretty expensive too, and they are a critical sensor for the PCM so it will run horrible or not at all if it gets contaminated.

I've only had my car in the rain a few times while driving, but one time it was a monsoon.   :22yikes:

I think most of the water hits the front of the car and goes elsewhere. The scoop does pull in some dust, but water hasn't been a problem for me.   :2cents:

I've actually heard that there is the possibility that the oiled filters oil can also contaminate the sensors, not sure how big of a risk it actually is or if some designs are more susceptible than others.  I know a few people with them that have had zero issues so far, so who knows.  I do remember reading a few TSB's in regards to this problem when in my advanced powertrain class down at school.  I can't remember what makes and models it pertained to though.

I drove NIKKI backfrom a show in Ill. in a massive thunder storm with no probs. But I admit I was a bit nervous about it.

My brother has a Pontiac with a KN air filter on it, every time he goes through the automatic car washs, it chokes the engine.
It's never happened in driving, but no scoop either.
