I love to see this discussion on this topic.  I have had several big blocks and even more small blocks.  I have had the feel of being set back in my seat with both.  I have showed several what a small block will do.  I love the sound of the small block and love how quick it responds.  Could have gone either way but decided to keep my car a small block.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

Interesting discussion. I have a stout 340 in my Duster which I've used to beat up on some Brand-X BB's, but I haven't yet decided what I'm going to put in my Challenger when the time comes. I might build a stroker small-block from a 360 core I've got lying around, but then again I also have a spare 440 core.
Decisions, decisions... :burnout:

I just realized that I prefer the small block, but in the shop all I have are big blocks. There are 3 440's and a 383. I only have two small blocks, the one in my Challenger and another 340 on an engine stand.

I love a BB because you cannot beat cubic inches most of the time, having said that I voted for the SB, I have one in my Challenger now and will be building a special SB later.   :working:
If you have the money the alum motors are the way to go either way BB or SB. For cruising the SB more than does the job, straight line performance Alum Hemi...   :burnout:   :cooldancing:

Barry,

The small blocks better have dual quads as well as the Sure Grip rear end.

I've always had small blocks.  I considered a big block for my car, but went with a 360.  I've been considering my next motor and am pretty sure that it'll be either a 440 or 472 small block from Indy.  Is there a head that will get the compression down to a streetable range?

I have always been a big block person. When I was a little tike, dad had an old army green power wagon. It was a 440 truck, and was very impressive. I came home from the hospital after I was born in a lime green hemi 4spd superbird. I think that may have something to do with my big block craze.

Small block, because of handling. Less weight in general is also nice for mileage and braking distance.
Sure, one might be of the opinion that a big block looks a lot better under the hood, but I'm quite happy with looking at my 340 when I open the hood. While the bigger cubes of a big block can be made to dish out more reliable HP than a small block, a small block can be encouraged to reliable power levels that's more than enough for me.

I really thought the numbers would more in favor big blocks.  I have always been a small block guy.  Like I said before I have had several big block cars e and b body cars.  If it was a b body the big blocks were much better.  I did like the feel of the 440/6 but I like the power of the small block 6 pack also both have a real good punch to them.

I guess the other reason big blocks should be more popular is the fact that you can still buy a small block performance car today but the huge CI monsters are all but gone except for the 8L Vipers !!, with the new technology you wouldn`t miss a big block , but putting new technology on an old big block is just that much sweeter  :2thumbs:

I voted small block.  I have the 340 in the T/A, a 5.9 in my truck, and a 383 in my convertible, and based on the experience with those cars there is no question in my mind, the 383 is a gas guzzling dog, the extra weight up front is not good however the small blocks are sweet.  But someday maybe I'll have a car with a 440 or a hemi and it will change my opinion!
