Couple off questions
« on: May 24, 2004 - 04:35:35 PM »
I've got a couple off questions about the work I would like to do on my challenger to get it ready for next spring. Its a bit about drivetrain, tires, transmission and engine. So I hope it's ok to put these questions in one topic?
My goal is to run low 13's. But first a bit about my car. It's a 1972 318 equiped with a 360 2bbl (previous owner), still got the original 904, 3.55:1 sure grip differential, hooker headers,  245/60/14 kelly charger rear tires (not good I guess). There's a 1968 340 on the way, freshly overbored 30+.
About the transmission, putting in a 727 requires shortening the driveshaft? And is the linkage for the shifter identical? I would prefer to keep the 904, it being a bit lighter and having less drivetrain losses. But should I install a low gear set and go to 3.23:1, keep the 3.55:1 and install a low gear set or keep the 3.55:1 and keep gear ratios stock? Any advice on Torque convertor stall speed? It's a 400 miles round trip to the drag strip (guess I'll stay for the weekend). For the rest just driving around locally 100 miles round trip max.
Then tires, I'm thinking about Cragar series 342 "D window" 16*7 with goodyear 245/50/16 Eagle HP Ultra Plus. Does anyone have a picture off a challenger with that rim? Or can anyone photoshop one? The sidewall is a bit low for acceleration but it's higher performance rubber. Enough to cancel out the higher sidewall?
And about engine.
I was thinking about converting to a hydraulic roller cam, hughes engineering HER1828AL or HER1418AL. Costs a lot, but when comparing the cost difference on the entire project I think it may be worth it. Will I have enough pressure with the KB243 piston? Will it work with the '68 X heads, polished, maybe light porting?  Does the powerband match the Edelbrock Performer RPM Airgap?

Big thanks to anyone who can help with these questions. I haven't decided on anything yet. Better to ask questions first about how to do it then ask questions later on how to  fix it ;)
Must be pretty clear that I'm kind off new to this thing ???

You do have to shorten the driveshaft to put in a 727.  Be sure to get it straight and balanced.  Whoever swapped the 727 in my car didnt do that and I had a horrible vibration.  You need a different slip yoke too.

the converter has to match the cam , if you have a 2500 cam you need a 2700 rpm stall converter
I recommend using a similar Engle cam , Engle used to grind Hughes cams , but Dave burned his bridges & I`m not sure who is grinding Hughes cams any more , I have great service from Engle though

I would not recommend KB pistons either , they are just a very expensive & brittle cast piston , spend a few $$ more & get forged pistons

Thanks for the advice on the cam company.
4458-H   K-58HYD
Valve lift .520"
Advertised duration 276°
Cam lift .347"
Duration @.050" 230°
Lobe Center 110°
.904" Lifter profile for Hot street performance, 9 to 9-1/2 to one compression, moderate idle, Midrange power 2000-5800 RPM
Now just to get the cam here. No online ordering info, Credit card over the phone. How does that work? Never payed that way.

Are Speed-Pro Powerforged pistons good?

Getting the driveshaft balanced could be a problem over here. I can probably get a my 904 built to handle the 340 for that money (well balancing, shortening, new yoke, 727). Maybe even import one.

I just phone them & order the cam , talk to Chris or Mark & tell them I sent you , make sure you get the correewct matching springs either from them or other companies with the same spring spec
Speed Pro pistons are great , top quality , very strong,7 just a bit heavy
