Skylark......What Skylark????
« on: May 12, 2002 - 04:51:04 PM »
Well, I just had another to add to the kill story list. I was on my way home from an early mothers day dinner with my family yeserday when a Skylark GS pulled up beside me. It was a guy and his wife. We came to a light and I rolled the window down just to hear the car. It sounded pretty cool. I guess he thought I wanted to talk to him. His wife rolled hers down and we exchanged info about the cars (engine, grears, carb, etc...). He apparently had a 454 in it. I am not to sure, but I didn't think you could fit on in those cars. Anyways, he boasted that he could take me. I guess he thought a younger guy like me (24yrs) was just all talk. So, we agreed to take our cars about 5 mins. away. We both pull up to the stop. He does a burn out. Not bad, so I give him a little show. Nothing to crazy, but enough to show him up. So, now the smoke clears and we are both ready. I think his wife has been through this before because she had a big smile on her face. We waited until the next green and then we launched. By the time I had shifted into 2nd, I was about a fender in front. By the time I was in 3rd, he was staring at my tail lights. I slowed down to give the thumbs up, just to be a good guy, and he just kept on driving. Felt kinda good. I hope I see him agian.  ;D ;D

The sound was pretty wild. Both cars at open throtle was pretty loud  :)
Most of the ricers around here don't have much to back up with. They just throw on an exhaust and some ground effects and then they think that makes them go fast. Although, the ones to watch out for don't have any stickers, or the such. I saw a prelude totally smoke a new vette. The guy in the lude said he runs constant mid elevens with no NOS. The thing is, it probably cost him both arms and a leg to get it. You could probably achieve the same with muscle for about half the cost.

Maybe I should get a second job........... ::)

It's all in fun I guess. I think by beating a car in a race is bragging rights in it own. No need to be a jerk afterwards. So a friendly thumbs up just shows good sportsmanship.
I love my Mopars, but I love the whole atmosphere of muscle cars. When ever I watch any older movies from the 70's, Dazed and Confused to be more percise (i bought in both on VHS & DVD, man what a movie), I just wish I was a part of that. I can only dream of what it was like driving around Detroit back in the day. MUSCLE EVERYWHERE :D
There are not many older Mopars around here, well none that drive them regularly. I think I am the only one that just drives one around and not just to shows. I was on my way to Moparfest last year and I was meeting up with some others at a Tim Hortons when 4 other guys drove up going to the same show. We all cruised on up together. Man was that awsome. There was another 'Cuda, a '73 340 car. Very nice and clean with a brand new bronze metallic paint job. There was also a dark green AAR, a green Charger (wow was his exhaust loud, 3" pipes that ended out before the rear tires :o), a 2dr custom, and a 69 swinger that was being trailered by a big 'ol Ram.
I think every on ramp on the Highway another mopar came on adding to the convoy. I don't htink I even turned onthe radio the whole ride up. We must of had about 12-13 cars driving toghter. I only knew 1 other guy, but we all drove up together.
That reminds me, I have some amazing pics that I will scan and post. There was this #'s matching red AAR Cuda with only 5400 origianal miles on it. I think my jaw dropped when I saw it. I have a few pics of that. Some other mopars as well. I will try and post them later today or tomorrow.

Kamstra:  I can't believe you had the guts to say that the GS can be fast.  Did you ever have one?  Now, I have a '71 Barracuda Convertible with a 440/4 speed which needs a lot more work before it's completed.  But about 10 years ago, I had a 1970 GS 350 (yeah, only a Buick 350; not even a 455!) that was all stock (except for a shift kit and an Oldmobile 12 bolt rear with 3.73:1 gears).  The car wasn't a rocket, but could consistently turn 14.6 -14.7's in the quarter mile.  It went faster than a lot of guys with stock big blocks (name any brand) who didn't know how to tune their cars.  Well, since this is a MOPAR site, most readers are probably throwing up hearing about a Buick, so I'll end this.  I've got to get back to working the driver's side quarter panel on my 'cuda.
