speedo check
« on: January 19, 2009 - 08:53:09 PM »
I am switching over to a rallye cluster this winter.  I want to make sure the speedo is working, unlike the one in my standard cluster (makes a racket and bounces at anything over 50 MPH) :pullinghair:.

How do you test a speedo out of the car.  Is it possibel to lubricate the speedo as well?

I cut off an old speedo cable and put it in a cordless drill. Make sure you run it BACKWARDS.

the bouncing could be the cables fault as well  , it is possible to open the speedo & clean & lube the moving parts

I plan to replace the speedo so, I hope the bouncing is not the cable...all though that is not to bad to replace.  :sly:

Is it possible to lube the speedo without pulling it all apart...not sure I am up for that, or really know how to do it.  :1zhelp:

not really you need to disassemble it , it is easy to do though , you need to remove the clear face plate & undo 2 scews from behind & the guage slips right out

You should also lube the cable too, as Chryco said it could cause the bouncing if it's dry. You can pull the inner cable out of the housing from the speedometer end and lube it with white lithium grease. Just coat the cable with the grease and slide it back into the housing. I've cured speedo bounce several times doing this.
