I won 2 trophies at the Boston World of Wheels....
« on: January 20, 2009 - 01:52:28 AM »
...for my 1/18 scale Shelby Cobra replica in the model car contest!  :roflsmiley:  Sorry, not for my Challenger.   :dupe:  :roflsmiley:

A little background on the car:

I really like a company called Factory Five Racing.  They make Shelby Cobra replicas.  The owner, Dave Smith, raced one in 1997 in a nation wide kit car competition called "The Run and Gun".  In a practice session, Dave flipped his car, but several hours later returned to the race after using duct tape, electrical tape, and mechanic's wire and other repairs where they won top honors as "King of the Hill" in the Run and Gun race.  His # 51 Cobra race car was my inspiration to make a 1/18 scale diecast model.

He was slated to be at the World of Wheel last week so I wanted to see if I could get his autograph.  There was also a model car contest so I thought since I had a model, I might enter it.  My son Joshua was the one who really wanted me to do it as I didn't want to deal with the hassle of coming back to pick it up, admission back to the show, parking.  The model car people gave me 2 free passes to get back in the car show.

I was surprised when I found out that I not only won 1 trophy, but  2 trophies,  1 for Best Diecast and 1 for Best of Show out of 78 cars!  They liked mine because it was what they called a "documented replica".  It was not only a model of a documented real car, but a of a real race car with racing history.

What made it all worth while was the smile it brought on my son's face-priceless.  :D

Here are some pics of the actual car then the model:

Congratulations Phil, :2thumbs: that is a way cool car, but you do not even look tall enough to see over the wheel of your real Challenger mate :clueless: .  Come to think of it you do not even look old enough to own a Challenger :poopoke: :smilielol: again, great job :woo:

I love it, mankind's answer to destruction = duct tape it!  Your son must have jumped through the roof with excitement, WTG!   :clapping:

I'm impressed!!!  How did you do scaled duct tape???  I ask, but I'm sure that SOME company out there produces it for modeling use...  I after-all built a model with shag carpet.  :)

Jeff

I just took regular duct tape and cut it to size. I'm sure there is some sort of scale duct tape but I go on the cheap.  It was lots of fun making this model and entering the model contest was not in the plans for that weekend but from Joshua's urgings I entered.  Just thinking about his smile still brings tears to my face.  :grinyes:

Thanks for the coompliments guys!

Thanks Jackie!

I think Dave's head is right by the side pipe.  I think that is Dave's brother Mark on the cell phone calling their mother saying, "Ma!  He smashed the car....again!!!"  :smilielol:  :roflsmiley:
