Stroke a 360, 440s are great but from your post I'd stay small block.
I just sold off all my big block stuff after many years of building and i feel great about it.

I had the interior done, added a new hood, removed the sunroof, and also had the car painted all for around 5k. I cut corners myself by painting the hood, stripped the car for paint and painted the interior. I am a lot more happier with the car coming around where I visualized her. If you have plans to do do some of this I would recommend it. It sure made me enjoy the car seeing it come around from what she used to look like. I have plans to rebuild either the 440 or the 340 as funds become more available. Look at my tread on restoration projects (my challenger project) and you'll see what I mean. sparky

All the responses are good but I think the very first one says it all. Build an engine slowly but surely and gather all the parts needed for the swap. Continue to enjoy the car as it is now and when you get ready it should not take more than a weekend to swap out the engine/tranny and getter going again.

with the cost of fuel today .and most likely a return to 4 bucks why bother with the 440 .also make sure you use the early pullys ballancer and pump housing .and dont forget the brackets .c

When I saw my 416 easily eclipse 500hp on the dyno with a little .528" lift cam I knew I did the right thing building a small block.

All good points made so far.  I have owned 6 cyl, 318, 340 and 440 mopars.
Keep in mind your drivetrain is 318 tough, not 440 durable.  Your DRIVETRAIN will need beefing up!!  You'd need a locking rear diff, etc to TRY TO GET TRACTION!!!!!    I used to have  68 GTX with 440.  I could do donuts all day long on DRY pavement.  I could break the tires loose upshifting to 3rd gear at 60 mph.  Went sideways once almost off the road hitting 2nd gear.
What am I saying??  Traction will SUCK with a nose heavy 440. Challengers are already nose heavy.   The heavier engine will required changing the front torsion bars, and  cornering handling will SUCK unless you add stiffer sway bars. So its not just the engine swap, its all the weight change details that will UP the cost too.
If you'd like more torque, hop up your 318, or build a 360 which is basically a stroked 318, or a 360 stroker if you want to spend more $$$.    I'm starting my 74 challenger project from scratch, took the 318 out, and putting in a 360 (no stroker).
My 340 duster did not have locking rear diff, would cook one tire all the time.  Ended up adding super stock rear springs and battery in the trunk.  Hook up was almost as good as locking rear diff, and cornering wasn't hurt at all, probably improved.
Jay Leno said his hemi mopar had so much torque it was no fun to drive.  Not a true road car, he said he didn't drive it much.    Hope this helps.

Tough call,  but I would probably build a killer small block. As most have said, leave the weight off and you will be happy.

I agree with the majority.  Keep the small block.  In addition to the rebuild, you’ll need to change the suspension (torsion bars), radiator, exhaust, transmission, etc. for the big block. If you want to impress people, install a six-pack.

The fact that you are happy with your car now, and only put on a limited number of miles with it each year I would say leave it as is!

Have you driven a 440 big block Challenger, if not maybe try and go for a spin in one. At least then you could compare the two. If it were me and I had a great ride that was reliable and fun to drive then I would stick with it. You know what they say "if it aint broke, don't fix it".  Good luck .

I'm building an original 318 Challenger myself right now. I like that it's not as temperamental than my 440 and will get way better milage. It will still look as cool when I'm done, too.

Two more for the penny jar!

:iagree: Nothing wrong with a stout small block. Mine too is a nasty small block with a streetable cam that I drive everywhere and often! :2thumbs:

Well, I'm no expert but I am  very fortunate to have both a '74 w/ a 360) and a '70 Vert with a 440 (6pk) (originally a 318).    There is no question that the '74 drives and handles better than the '70.    However,  whether its the Vert or the 440/6 -- I put 1500 to 2000 miles on the '70 and 500 on the '74.......
