Sham-Wow
« on: January 22, 2009 - 01:19:53 PM »
Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone else has seen the commercials for this ShamWow cleaning/drying product.  "Made In Germany" as they claim, it's supposed to be the next best thing since beer...

Well, my wife found it at a CVS drug store - "As Seen on TV" - and bought it for me.  I'm hoping to get the Viper out of storage for a much-needed bath this weekend, and wanted to see if anyone had any feedback before I laid this thing down on my paint.

'Cause if it screws up my paint, then I gotta figure out how to get to Germany and #*&&@ kill someone.  :)

Try it on the Stratus or the Cuda first.  Or your wife's car - she bought it for you.  :stirpot:

I wouldn't let it touch my car  :stomp:

There's a reason that it's spelled SHAM (shamois) instead of chamois.

This month's issue of Popular Mechanics had a test of it; it reported as OK, not stellar, felt rough on the skin which is why the recommeded patting down with it, not wiping.  I do not recall if they tried it on a car or other smooth hard surface, sorry, that issue came and went almost 2 weeks ago.  Its probably still on the store shelves if you want to sneak a look.

Personally, I'd use a well-known company's chamois over some "As Seen On TV" gimmick on any expensive paint job. :2cents:  I purchased something that I suppose is similar to the "Sham-Wow" from Wal-Mart called a Streak-free Spotless Dryer made by Detailer's Choice.  It is very soft and is advertised as being clear coat safe and never streaks or spots.  I have yet to use it, but I'd imagine it will be alright to use on my Stealth's paint.

Thanks for the link - I might be out $20 bucks!  :)

For those who are curious, this thing doesn't look or feel ANYTHING like a Chamois cloth.  "Shammies" are almost leather in feel, and have a real rubbery texture when wet.  These things feel like ultra-industrial napkins.  They're VERY coarse (I'm anxious to see if they soften when wet) and also very, very lightweight (when dry.)  If nothing else, I'll try it on a non-visible spot (like door sills) just to see how it works.  I have one of those $10 specialty drying towels from AutoZone if the Shamwow fails to impress.

Thanks again.
