Stress cracks top of windshield pillar to roof joint
« on: January 22, 2009 - 09:42:09 PM »
I have not yet sanded the paint off, but the crack is visible, just a hair line width, wrapping around the outer 3 sides of the pillar.  No damage to unibody, original front fender and rear quarter.  Door has been replaced in the past.  The welds along the window, windshield, and inner pillar all look ok, none are missing.   Any comments on best repair would be appreciated.
Body also has rear quarter panel cracks at the aft lower quarter window, which from what I read is common.  I'm replacing both rear quarters so no problem there.   Car is 318 74 challenger, no big cubes.  Thanks.
Phil

Since the paint is still on, is the crack just in the body filler that covers the actual welds where the roof meets the pillars? If so, that is common.

Mine had the same thing. After I media blasted the car, it was actually cracked at the seam. It's lead there on mine so I'm assuming it's a factory leaded seam. Usually lead won't do that, but it did on mine also.

This is why sub-frame connectors or torque boxes are a good idea, even if your car is just a cruiser.

Since no-one has actually answered your question, let me try. First, I might be tempted to get some factory frame measurements (from a factory book or Mitchells or another car) and measure your frame points. At the very least measure cross-ways from front and rear-most fender bolts to make sure the unibody is square. Seems to me if it's cracking at all roof attachment points, and the door was replaced you want to rule out a hard hit. If it all checks out, grind the lead filler to the base metal and ensure there's no rust down there. If there is or not, I'd treat it with Metal Ready (or some Phosphoric acid prep) and then fill er back up with more lead or bondo. (Make sure you don't sand lead finely - it's toxic dust like that!). good luck.

As I suspected then. Here is a photo of one without the filler in it, whether the seam was covered with filler or lead you can remove it with a small wood chisel.

Only the one pillar has a crack in it.  I'll remove the lead filler and inspect the structure.  Thanks to all.

Use a torch and a brush, that lead will come right out of the joint. Weld it up to make it stronger.
