we was at the parts house when one of our customers walks in, he said that he was building a big block the replace the 350 rocket. he asked if we could put it in, i told him to give use a call and we would set a time. then he starts talking how he was going to beat my 340's butt..... a week later he calls and said he is ready.
we get the car in the garage, drop the rebuilt engine in,
and start to hook up the stuff. i was under the car TRYING to put the converter bolt in when he walks in. WITH THE PLUGS OUT, I NEED A LONG BREAKER BAR(THE SNAP-ON BREAKER,YOU KNOW THE ONE)TO TURN IT OVER. i told him that there was something wrong, that it's way to tight. these are his words"no,i made it tight cause that's what these motor's call for."
he would not listen, and told me to put it together. when we got it to run, it would run so hot that the headers would turn red before we could get it out of the garage.
he said that he put a bigger cam in, and was not sure about the marks!!!!he gave use the ok to look at the
chain and gears but not to remove the engine to see why it was so tight. the chain was off by at least 3 teeth.so we got it back together, it ran better but it still ran hot. he had the rad. checked, new water pump put on with no help to the running hot. he gives in and said to pull the motor out and he would pick it put to find out
why it's running hot. the next day we meet up at the parts house again, and he asked use to take a look.
here is the short list of what we saw. the crank had rod bolt marks on all the journals, was cut up with dirt in the bearings and the oil pan had leaves in it.. he said that he could have the machine shop to put in together.
AND AFTER ALL OF THAT THE 350 WAS STRONGER
THE 340 STILL OUT RAN THE BIG BLOCK!!
