HP # Opinions
« on: May 29, 2004 - 10:58:17 AM »
ok, I have to get to a dyno, but I need opinions.

I have a 1970 440 block.
Bored 0.0060 over.
10.5:1 slugs
Purple Shaft performance cam
906 heads, ported & polished, three angle valve job
balanced forged crank
stock cast-iron dual plane intake
Holley 750 cfm, vaccuum sec's

along with a 727 Fireball tranny, and 3.91:1 suregrip rear, it goes like nobody's business

BUT...what do you think the HP is?  I've guestimated around 425-450, but what do you think?

Any thoughts? opinions?  questions?

gotta get chryco on the line , he will  have a good idea. what was the factory  compression for that year and what  was the cam lift and duration for that year compared to what you got now?...I am working on my first  plymouth , it also is a 440 and I can not get over how heavy that factory cast intake was....

Any Idea how fast it goes in the quarter, (mph)
If you know the cars weight and the quarter mph you
can figure rearwheel horsepower using the formula in
the Mopar Performance books.

Get ready to be a little disappointed :-\

Anything around 300 horspower or above it will pull
like that but after 400 true horsepower it's hard to keep
it on the ground.

(fun though)

when it comes to HP ? I usually try not to answer , the factiry ratings are optimal , not water pump or fuel pump to drive , no air cleaner or hood hurt air flow , no trapped hot air to breathe , partial exahust systems etc .

360 said it best be prepared to be disappointed , while every magazine has 400 hp small block Chevs , the reality i you probably don`t even make the 375 Hp it is rated at .
My Duster made 425 RWHP  & ran mid 11s at 118 MPH & would lift the front wheels 2-3 ' off the ground

I thought the factory ratings were lower than the actual output?  ??? "HEMI = 450hp. 440+6 = 410hp. 440+4 390hp.

well, I Do know that with the right tires, I've lifted the nose a few inches out of the traps.  It was kinda scary the first time, but after that, I couldn't get enuff!

How fast did ya go and how much does it weigh?

the last time I went out with the red car I went 106mph
with a 12:41 time. Weighs about 2800# with me in it

That's with the mild 360/904 combo I put together for
bracket racing

well, after a few practice launches, I got a 12.07.  The car itself is around 3,000Lbs.  and at the time, I was about 185.

I've basically stripped the car of anything adding weight, and taken out ANYTHING that can drain HP but the power brakes.  I have removed the power steering box, have an electric fan, etc etc.

The interior is light weight seats, a stock rallye dash, and from the seats back to the bumper, the floor is light weight aluminum, including the tubs (sans back seat).  Trunk mounted battery for weight distribution.  There is no head liner or trim.  just painted.  There is a carpet, but no sound dampener or insulation.

OK but what was the MPH?

Give me that and using the Mopar formula we can find
out the horspower

MPH was 119.

As for the intake, I KNOW it sux!!  It's killin me to have it there.  I read all the magazines, and although some say it's still an ok intake, others say it's choking the life out of the motor.  I'm hopin to save my pennies for a single plane aluminum one.  fingers crossed.

With 119 MPH in the traps and about 3200 pounds with driver the Mopar Performance Drag Strip Dyno sez
your car makes 430 HP

pretty stout

Mine only makes 275 HP @ 106MPH  using the same chart
