The cowl is the area in front of the windshield right? Under the hood?

Actually, the part of the cowl that's being referred to in this post is the horizontal portion (where the wipers are mounted on). In the attached picture it's painted satin black. Hope this helps.

The cowl is the piece of metal from the base of the windshield wrapping into the engine compartment.  In the photo above your post, the top of the cowl is the part painted black with the plastic grilles in it and the top part of the firewall, where the ignition module and wiper motor are mounted.  If you look carefully, you can see that the line of sealer under the ignition module.  That's the parting line between the cowl and the firewall.

I read to that early cars were blacked out on the cowl.Mid year they were body color.I am building a 70 cuda 440 4 speed from a cuda shell I purchased. It was a real big block 4 speed car but no fender tag.It is being painted this week.I am still not sure if I  am going to black out the cowl.If I do paint the cowl I will use trim black paint. This paint lays great.

fish, you might want to read Barry's comments earlier in this thread.  He debunked the theory that the early cars had the cowls blacked out  and if anyone would know, Barry would.

Well, I did not say if early cars did or did not have it actually. I said if you find evidence of it, put it back.  ;)
