3/8 sending unit
« on: February 02, 2009 - 09:46:22 AM »
looking for a 3/8 sending unit for my 73 chally.

I have heard nothing good about the reproduction units, so looking for original

are the sending units the same for all years or 72-74 challys only? are all e-body units the same? I will be going to the swap in columbia this weekend looking for one, so if they are all the same it will make it easier.

Scott,

The 3/ repro's I've seen have all been the same...They have a tube for the return line. I don't think 1970's had this option, but the 72-74 version should.

My original sending unit had a metal strap inside to run the ground signal, but my repro had a blue wire. I'm just throwing this out there as a possible way to tell A NOS unit from a repro.

so Mike, would all e-body from 72-74 be the same? I would just buy a repro, but have heard everyone has problems with them.

Yes, Scott....They would be the same.

As for my previous post, that metal strap I was talking about is actually for the gauge signal. My original had that, and you had to make sure it didn't touch the pick-up tube when installing it or your gauge would read full all the time.   :banghead:

I don't know how successful you will be finding a NOS unit, but good luck.   :2thumbs:

basically you get what you pay for, the cheaper senders are hit and miss on reading correctly, I have stainless steel reproductions have had no issues with them working properly unless there is no ground. All of the 3/8 senders have the 1/4 Return line.

Thanks Dave, it says 70-71, so it will fit a 73?  I will let you know, if it works that might just be the direction I go.

Dave,
I checked your website and the 318-400 take a 5/16 sending unit, I mic my outlet tube tonight and it is 5/16 with no return.  I know I'm a dumbass, but I didn't see any part number on it just the chrysler symbol.  I have a 73 chally with a 340, so I think the 5/16 is the correct one.  Do you stock it?  My ring is good for now until I try and get it off.
