sounds stupid, but need a way to siphon gas
« on: February 02, 2009 - 12:05:06 PM »
My days of ending up with mouthfuls of gas are over. I need some kind of device, like a manual pump thingy, to effectively pump out gasoline. You would think this would be a straightforward thing, pretty easy to find, but I can't. My first thought was the Northern Tool catalog, but can't find anything in there. Any suggestions?

When I saw the thread title I was going to tell you to get a hose and suck on it. I would check places like Harbor Freight or Ace hardware, you should be able to find a manual hand pump or one that can attach to your drill. My Dad got a manual pump from an Ace Hardware but that was about 10 years ago.

I would suggest that you go to a truck stop they usually have them with a ball type.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

i take a hose and about 4in from the end cut a notch then put your blow gun from air hose in notch and put it in the gas can, once you get fuel going it continues by itself. warniing works really good with diesel but with gas it will mist, do not do it near anything that could ignite the mist.

At work, our shop foreman found a hand-cranked bilge pump that works really well for moving large amounts of coolant back into the bus when we have to drain the coolant on a road call.  I've seen it in action - it's not hard to use and the mechanic moved at least 10 gallons of coolant in under five minutes.  Try a marine supply shop.

You need a flowN'go. Its a small hand operated pump, just to get the syphon started. - then gravity takes over.

You don't need anything but a section of whatever hose you are gonna use.  Fill the hose up with water and hold you thumb over the exposed end and place the other end in the tank to be drained.  Lower the end in your hand to below tank level and release your thumb. The water in the hose will drain and "pull" the gas out of the tank.  Hold the hose over the ground until the gas starts to flow then place the end in whatever container you desire.  No sucking on a hose, and nothing to buy.....    :2cents:

BTW -- we always called a 6 foot section of hose an "alabama credit card"....    :roflsmiley:     :cooldancing:

I just use 2 pieces of hose conneted to an outboard motor primer bulb. It has a one way valve in it and an arrow showing the flow. They are used to prime the fuel systems of small outboard boat motors, just give it a couple of squeazes and it will sart to flow.
