Drive Shaft Color (SS or Black?)
« on: February 03, 2009 - 09:26:00 PM »
Were drive shafts on AAR's painted satin black or should it have a stainless steel look?

This is a restored driveshaft from an AAR. From a post I saved from last year.

Perfect.  Thanks a lot.  Any idea on how best to achieve that look?

Metal Mask paint from POR 15 reduced slightly and then sprayed from an air spray gun would work well. Very durable paint. You can find iron grey paint in rattle cans also. Light and dark shades are available.

Topcat,

Did all Mopars have that striping for identification purposes?  I thought it was only GM cars that had that.  I know our 70 el camino SS 396 has painted on stripes similar to those on the AAR's shaft.

I like to run a stripe longways to see if the shaft twists on you,........  :working:

According to the article I read when I saved this picture, these stripes were like this from the factory. It was probably an inspection line color done giving the thumbs up everything was all good. How accurate this color, thickness distance, etc. I can't be sure. I do recall reading this appeared to be what was done from the assembly line. i certainly would like to see more OEM examples. ECS on Moparts would no doubt have some good info what was actually done back then. I would have loved to have seen his car at the Nats last summer.
