Can you just lightly sand it and paint again?

:iagree: Just rinse it off soon after the paint bubbles to avoid damaging the anodizing. It shouldn't be an issue, i just wouldn't leave it on for a long time...

And if you feel your skin getting warm, rinse with lots of water, quickly!  :22yikes:

I definatly do not want to hurt the anodizing under the paint , the grille is virtually brand new but I assume the black R/T grille was not available when this was replaced in the mid 70s so the argent is perfect but wrong

If the argent was applied with a spray can it should come off almost immediately with that stripper, and short applications shouldn't do anything to bother the anodizing. Its actually pretty hard to remove anodizing, I had to sand it off of a clear anodized aluminum motorcycle rim (the anodizing was old, yellow, and damaged in places), and I couldn't come up with an easy chemical process (and I tried the stripper!). I just mentioned it because of the small possibility that if you left it on for hours it might somehow mar the finish, although that hasn't been my experience.

it was applied by the factory & is the very coarse argent , somehow after 40 years I doubt it will be easy to remove but I dont want to hurt the anodizing , I will check on the aircraft stripper in the morning , I tryed the same stripper on the paint & it didn`t touch it but it turns out I had epoxy primer under the paint & it did nothing to lift it even the white exerior paint was untouched by it  :pullinghair:

When I used aircraft stripper on a hood it was odd. Some places bubbled up and some places seemed unaffected. I put some on a few times and eventually it did the job.

A nylon brush helped work this stuff into the corners. A wooden chopstick helped dig out the difficult bits too.

Wax will inhibit the process, scuffing paint 1st will help.

CP, have you tried good ole lacquer thinner?...may be the ticket.

Try some brake fluid. It won't hut the aluminum. I always buy it by the quart.

if there is absolutely nothing wrong with the existing paint, just mask off the rest of the grille, scuff the paint with red scotch pad and 400-600 grit paper, clean and shoot the right color

Argent is textured. Really rough. Very tough. The black R/T and T/A grilles were smooth. No way would you get the correct finish without removing the argent.

I know, that, but I'm sure sandpaper can smooth it down,I just figured to post that option as well
