"How's the Viper doin'?!"
« on: February 04, 2009 - 04:23:13 PM »
Warning:

I'm bored.

You've been warned.

I'm sitting at work missing a meeting that I don't need to be at.  So I thought I'd share how things have been going for the "ViperMan."

Weather up here in Ohio has sucked, plus I've been busy getting ready for that singing gig at PSU last weekend.  I had the Viper out two weeks ago just briefly - long enough to put the vanity plate on.  I also took photos of the steering wheel and gearshift knob...  and then forgot to upload them.

I ordered and received a cruise control module for it from Snake Oyl products.  The instructions are terrible, but as far as the product goes it looks pretty good - well built and such.  It's supposed to warm up this weekend (and then rain the whole time,) so I'm going to lock myself in my storage garage and try to get it installed.

I've been talking to a guy from the Viper board pretty heavily regarding the topic of adding ABS brakes.  He has a '99 GTS and he installed components from a 2001 car.  He needed the ABS module, hydraulic control unit, all four steering knuckles, four wheel speed sensors and tone wheels, and then harness components.  Contrary to my suspicion, the PCM doesn't get involved with the ABS module - it takes everything it needs from existing sensors.  You pretty much just install the parts, make a bracket to mount the module and hyd. unit, run new hoses and harnesses, and you're done.  The only problem is you have to move some emissions stuff (I believe the charcoal canister) which is tricky, but not impossible.  He said his Viper stops better than his wife's 2004 SRT10.  I asked if he was looking to adopt.

I've been debating a lot lately over the repaint/reupholster topic.  I've been toying with the idea of selling my Black GTS and trying harder to find a 2001 or 2002 Red Viper - Red being the most unpopular color and thus no one would care if I had it painted.  However, even with the continuing gloom over the economy, Viper prices have actually risen on Ebay.  (They're still not selling, but owners are holding out for more moolah.)  I've nearly convinced myself that I don't really care if there's one less black-and-cognac Viper out on the roads, because within a few years, ANY Viper is going to be rare, whether it's been repainted or not.

So that's it in a nutshell.  The ABS and Cruise really do add value to the car.  There are some who feel strongly that "nanny" electronic devices don't belong on a Viper, but I say it's a car.  If it were purely meant for track driving, it wouldn't come with map pockets, glove boxes or leather seating, either.  I'm realizing that this Viper still isn't 100% what I wanted, but I can make it what I want it to be for less hassle than selling it and buying another one.

Bottom line is, I miss driving it, and I can't wait for SPRING!!!    :burnout:

Eeeehhh...  Not as well.

I haven't started it in maybe two months, and it's sitting outside with snow on it.  I wanted to cover it but didn't get home before it snowed, and I have no way to clean it and cover it.

I'm just hoping that I'll get a new job here soon, move, get a place with a garage, and get it stored.  Then I want to start working on repairing it's floor, bracing the body, and collecting parts for the suspension/steering rebuild, new motor, etc.

That's the problem with having two cars, one's turn-key ready to go, and the other is in dire need of repairs.

But let's be fair here - a 2001 Windstar and a 2000 Viper are two different animals completely.

I'm gonna step out on a limb and say that the Windstar probably doesn't have 14" cross-drilled & slotted rotors, 6-pot alcon aluminum calipers front AND rear, AND a hydroboost master cylinder that produces 2,000 pounds-per-square-inch of brake pressure (at least that's what the guy said...)  It takes VERY LITTLE effort to lock up those front tires.  I've had ABS in my 01 Stratus for 8 years and have never had a problem.  (knocks on wooden desk...)

Lol, Stroker, there are a lot of ways to take that comment.  I'm not sure which way you intended.  Yes, I do have something of a spontaneous brain.  Now if only my wallet could keep up.  :)  Things will change significantly when this job finishes up in June.

By the way, I should say this - my goal is to get my Barracuda's title back by June as well - I'm slated to pay off the loan two-and-a-half years early.  Not bad, huh?

Here are the pictures I've been promising...

Steering wheel from a wrecked RT/10.

MGW Ltd. "Gripper Shift" shift knob - polished chrome.

They're not great photos - took with my cell phone.  I couldn't get the Snakehead to appear from the shift knob without darkening the image severly.  It looks great in-person.

Having owned both ABS and non ABS Vipers I can say that I would prefer to be driving around in the ABS viper.

Now, that color combo (black with cognac) is a very cool!  I would love to own that car.  As a mater of fact that is the exact color combo I would get if I could afford another one.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

I'll trade ya.  And I'm not kidding.

I want an 01 or 02 - no longer care about color.

But since no one expects less than 40 thousand for the their Gen II Viper, then I've realized that I pretty much have to make my 2000 what I want it to be.

So blue with white stripes, black interior (though technically, leaving it cognac MIGHT work, and it'd definitely be one-of-a-kind, then...) with ABS and Cruise Control.

Whole thing would cost me maybe 11 to 12K, over time...  That's still less than paint and body alone would cost on the 'Cuda.
