I might sound like a total tool here, but after Top Gun, I LOVED those aircrafts.  I still have a skill-level 3 model in the box, unassembled.  Waaaay beyond my patience point!!!

What's it like, man, flyin' one of those things?  Wings swept back, mach-whatever...  Beautiful aircraft.  Why'd they decomission them, and more importantly, what took it's place??

I'm awed.

They decommissioned them because they were getting old and the technology was becoming out of date.  Right now, the only military force still flying F-14's is the Iranians, acquired back in the 70's before the Iranian Revolution.

What took it's place was the F-18 E/F SuperHornet.  This will eventually be replaced by the F-35C, the naval version more commonly known as the Joint Strike Fighter.

The retirement of the F-14 was mostly a maintenance issue. The maintenance hours required for 100% mission capability on an F-14 was more than double than on an F-18. Maintenance aside, the F-18E can't hold a candle to the Tomcat on speed. The official top speed of the F-14D was Mach 2.5+,   the plus part is where it's at.
The F-15, F-16 and F-14D are the only U.S. Fighters capable of accelerating in the vertical.     The jocks don't say "speed is life" for nothing.

Unfortunately no, I did not fly the Tomcat. I was responsible for maintenance, specifically avionics and fire control systems. It is an incredible bird and I'm proud to have been involved with them.

Most any image hosted elsewhere can be linked to using the "Insert Image" icon the second row tool just below the I 

1st you need to right click on the image, select PROPERTIES, highlight &  COPY  it's "address" URL.
Then come back here & click on the icon... you will see {img][/img} in the text area put your courser int the middle, right click & PASTE ...will look like this
