Under the Hood Wiring
« on: February 09, 2009 - 08:08:18 PM »
I've read a bit on some of the replacement wiring harness kits available such as "painless" ect. I am toying with the idea of just replacing the wiring under the hood of my Challenger. It's had a bit of chop/splice done and could use an upgrade. I'm not ready yet to tackle the whole car and the rest is pretty much OK from what I see. Can you buy a kit for just under the hood wiring?? And what kit would you recommend if any?? Thanks!!

use some die-electric grease on the terminals , it is far easier to just plug in a matching factory style harness than re-wire with Painless or Ron Francis

The problems isn't the terminals. It's the cut/spliced (mutiple times) wiring from the terminal block that I'm worried about! :22yikes:

I understand that , just make sure the connection at the firewall doesn`t cause problems as well

Will do!! Thanks Neil!! I always appreciate your input as well as all the other folks that pitch in with helpful tips and advice. That's what makes this site so awesome. And you usually don't have to wait 3 weeks for a response or get flamed for asking a dumb question!! I ask a lot of dumb questions :clapping:

Sorry to revive and older thread but I am in this boat right now.....

Couple questions:

-- These guys have a price of only $105 for electronic ignition.....great price!  But is the quality really good? All the "right" connectors and such?  I have a 72 Barracuda but it has a 74 engine....they list one part number for 72-74 so i guess I should be fine...right?

-- Does the harness basically just plug in at the firewall?

Thanks folks!

I know Bill personally and have seen that Cuda on his web site. It is a real unrestored R code car.

Yes, the electrical forward wiring harness just plugs into the firewall terminal block. You may have to coil the washer motor lead if your car has a two speed wiper setup. He just used my taillight wiring harness as a template to produce a 72 - 74 harness. Mine wasn't cut, just beat with overspray and corrosion at the connections. Just got it a couple of days ago. I will post a picture of it. That should tell you all you need to know about his quality.

I have had no issues with Evans wiring , some have had problems with the wrong wires plugged into the wrong position in the connector , it is simple to compare to the old harness to be sure , it is only 8 wires

Well, I dont have a good harness to compare to...mine is pretty much toast and hacked.

Is the issue at the firewall side or the termination end?

I just ordered my engine bay wiring harness from Bill Evans. I have a '74 Challenger, but the build date is Oct of '73, so Bill said I needed the '73 harness. All you need to do is provide Bill with some basic info on your car ( such as engine size, year, make, model ect.) and he can tell you waht you need. It was simple for me and $115.00 bucks including shipping!! :2thumbs: :2thumbs:
